Hi

Friend with tiny baby who is not gaining weight is feeding hungry baby milk. Won't this hinder weight gain as baby is fuller for longer?

Thanks

If think you are right, it's not significantlyh higher calorie. Has she spoken to her HV about a4 strategy for feeding her baby?

I've not asked yet, I just spotted it at her house yesterday and it's been playing on my mind. Am seeing her again today and was going to ask her if HV suggested it. Little mite is so skinny. Sad

Hungry baby milk - ie not 'follow on' but the stuff marketed for 'hungry' babies - is permitted by the regulations to be sold as suitable from birth, but most HCPs would not recommend it for young babies. The calorie content is the same.

Some specialist formulas are higher calorie - are you sure this was not what you saw? The mum should ask her HV is there is any confusion, though.

Was def sma hungry baby. I don't have much faith in her HV as same HV said ok to make bottles with cooled ( cold! ) boiled water! Will bring it up and see what she says, she might have just seen it and thought it would help.

Well I asked her and didn't make much of a point if it, She said that the HV did recommend (albeit sheepishly) and said that it makes her sleep longer at night. She is seeing the paed soon as no real weight gain, maybe that will sort it.

I have never had to deal with an underweight baby (dd is a lump) but I suppose I presumed that it would need to be fed more rather than a long time between feeds.

Hungry milk is made to be harder for the stomach to digest, it's supposed to be to delay weaning in bigger, hungrier babies who aren't satisfied by first milk but aren't developed enough to safely eat food.

It's not for the teeny onesShock

Hungry baby milk is supposed to be for babies who are taking a lot of formula and essentially never get full. I think the indication for it is if LO is feeding a bottle that is half the figure of body weight (ie 10lb baby takes 5oz bottles) every 1-2 hours. Maybe as the baby is small she thinks that this formula will help gain weight quicker though this is the case. Also anyone I know who tried hungry baby said that there LO brought a lot back up. I can't imagine a first time mum would decide to use this unless someone had suggested it so maybe we got some bad advice Confused

Sorry I meant to say this is not the case , agree with prev poster that it's not for little bubs but to delay weaning x
