Breastfeeding DS with a broken tooth (his) ow ow ow! Any tips?

Poor DS2 (14 months) slipped in the bath last night and chipped one of his front incisors Sad Now there's a curved chip out of it, making the bottom of the tooth end in two viciously sharp points. I took him to the dentist this morning and she said that at his age and wrigglyness, she wasn't about to try to file it down (hard pointy metal file in wriggly toddler mouth, I can see her point) and that all she can suggest is to let him play with 'hard toys' and see if he wears it down himself. She didn't seem bothered that he might cut his own lip or tongue though.

I know the needle-sharpness of it will wear down, but it'll be pointy until he loses his milk teeth, I think. At the moment, it's extremely painful to feed him, particuarly on one side. It's like breastfeeding a snake. Sad I've already got a couple of tiny sore scabs on my areola which, as usual for tiny wounds on my nipple, hurt out of all proportion. If I really stuff the nipple into his mouth, it's slightly better, but he's scraping on me when he comes off too. Sad

Poor DS2. I think he's over the odd feeling in his mouth because something's changed, but I'm in a lot of pain and very reluctant to give up bf because of this unfortunate accident. I was thinking of buying him a pumice stone to 'play' with - is that a bad idea? Dentist didn't say 'don't file it down yourself' but had nothing useful to suggest. Hmm (Yes, I did tell her I was breastfeeding him and that it bloody hurt!)

i would take him back to the dentist actually and just ask if they can attempt to file it a little bit.
obviously stop if he is too wriggly/upset but if you can persuade him to sit still for just a tiny while she may be able to make it not quite as sharp

Mmm, maybe. I think it was very much up to the dentist I happened to get (can't fault them for sorting out an appointment within a couple of hours of me ringing up) - some might be happier with filing a 14 mo's teeth than others, IYSWIM. I honestly don't think I can persuade him to keep still though - when he's awake, the only time he's still and focussed is when I've given him something delicious to eat, and that won't really work here. Grin

I did buy him a pumice stone, which he's refusing to gnaw on, because - why, mummy? Oh well.

you could try filing it yourself? with the pumice? while he is asleep maybe
