To feed or not to feed???

My 16mo DS has diarrhoea & vomiting.
He's been sick 7 times in the last 20 hours and 1 runny nappy.
I've been bfing him on demand and giving him occasional water because he asks for it.
Should i continue to bf him?
It feels like the last lot went over the entire sofa :(

Also, is there any time that i should panic??

I've always fed on demand with D&V

IME the time to worry is when they don't want to feed at all, won't take fluids in any form and are particularly 'floppy'

If he's accepting feeds and taking water I'd see that as a good sign. You could always have a phone consultation with your GP if you'r e worried Smile

Continue to feed on demand. BM is very gentle on the stomach and won't be making the D+V worse. It's very hydrating and the small amounts that will be absorbed will be doing him good.

Hope he feels better soon.

Thank you!
I feel so helpless.
Don't know what we'd do without bfing when he's poorly!

Agree with other posters.

He's getting fluids, salts, nutrition in a form that his body can very, very quickly absorb (ie before he chucks some or apparently all of it up) so he will keep his glucose levels up better, it won't irritate the stomach, in fact it will sooth it, it will comfort him, and you will be making antibodies like nobody's business to help him clear it all out.

His poos may go all breastfed babyish for a while which is fine, and is also helping to clear out the infection.

Hurrah for breastfeeding - this is one of those times where we all go "thank goodness I did it".

As bernard says, still keep an eye out for worrying signs as normal but if he's still breastfeeding and generally alert then just keep working through it. If you're concerned, get him checked out.
