Washable breast pads? yes or no?

Im pregnant with no4, and hope to breastfeed as i have done previously.

Must of spent a small fortune on breastpads, so wondered if its worth going down the washable route this time?

Well started the thread as lots of reviews had said they leak.

I would much rather washable ones than disposables he I and find some worth having.

Someone mentioned bamboo, they sound like they might be good as bamboo nappies are very absorbent.

I never got on with them despite trying. They were bulky and damp and horrid. I used Supermarket own cheapo disposables instead.

I love them, I use the lansinoh ones which come with their own washing bag. Am on DC2 with them and don't seem to have lost any. Get at least 2 boxes as then you can have a bagful on the go and a bagful in the wash. Washing bags also very useful for baby socks, which also seem to get stuck in my machine door.

I am very leaky but mainly from the other boob when actually feeding. I just pop a muslin down my top behind baby so can't be seen, catches the flow when you let down. Doubt disposables would cope with that torrent tbh either.

I used them and found them excellent. Also had lily padz - the stickiness comes back if you wash them gently.

Oops.

I used washables. Washed them in a little net so I didn't lose them. Got by with just 2 sets so definitely a money saver, and I liked the soft, bulky thing - protection for painful pinches and squeezes!

MistyB · 26/02/2012 16:08

I washed the lily pads when I was in the shower and they seemed to be fine. The still adhered when worn inside a bra or vest top even though they were not as sticky as day one and lasted for ages. I bought two pairs as they are difficult to find in the dark at night and I think I replaced them after about 6 months by which stage I was leaking less so only bought one replacement pair.

notcitrus · 26/02/2012 16:46

Didn't work for me - I bought 6 pairs and they didn't last me through the daytime, let alone night.

The Lansinoh disposables I used about 5 pairs in 24 hours. No other disposables came near coping.

JugglingWithTangentialOranges · 26/02/2012 21:22

Just for the record I never had very leaky boobs anyway ... I assumed everyone was similar. Only really a few drips when I hadn't BF for ages ... or yes a bit drippy at beginning of feeding from the boob not presently required ... agree muslins good for dealing with this. The washables I used were more for reassurance than necessity. Everyone should have boobs like mine ... they were fab at BFing in general too ! Smile

HappyCamel · 26/02/2012 21:53

I got Boots ones, absolutely brilliant, was washing all the time any way so no hassle. I bought two packs = 6 pairs. Little bit of double sided sticky tape helped with some tops in the summer but I hardly ever used it. The best bit is that they don't bunch, rustle or itch like the disposable ones.

OneLittleBabyGirl · 26/02/2012 22:10

Belina I'm still leaking at 11mo sometimes. If I'm not leaking I don't have to wear breastpads, but if I am, I don't trust disposables anyway! Towards end of the work day, I sometimes can see milk dripping out of my nips. I really don't think my old washables can handle that.

gingerroots · 26/02/2012 22:24

The imse vimse ones (or summit) are fab.v discrete & soft altho look the size of dinner plates Grin here: www.babipur.co.uk/shop/p1517/Organic_Washable_Breast_Pads_(3_pairs)/product_info.html

threecurrantbuns · 27/02/2012 09:00

Thanks all, well previously I haven't leaked a huge amount as I've had fairly regular feeders, but would have a let down if I hit 3hours and always a big let on the opposite side to the one I was feeding from.

Would like to try some but get the best ones first foot want to go through loads of types.

I only used tesco own with my previous dcs and I liked them best as all the other chief brands all seems very bulky and crystally.

The linked one look quite good, but also the little lamb bamboo sound good being a bamboo is very absorbent.

I honestly can't recommend the littlelamb ones enough. They are so soft and nice and flat unlike the ones in the link. They wash very well too.

OlivesIncubator · 28/02/2012 17:06

I really liked Boots washables. I am not very leaky, but very leaky friend recommended them to me. I didn't like they way that the Lansinoh cream wouldn't wash out of them though. Left them greasy-feeling. And definitely wash in a bag. I started out with about 10 pairs, down to about 3. Suspect they were all eaten by the machine.

Mombojombo · 28/02/2012 21:43

Dear crikey! I read this thread a couple of days ago, and when my washing machine conked out yesterday I got a terrible sinking feeling... DH has just extracted a very sorry looking Boots breast pad from the drainage pipe. I can remember WEEKS ago wondering why I suddenly had an odd number of pads! Glad it was DH and not a maintenance person!
