I am currently mixed feeding my dd2 who is 10 weeks old but am considering swapping to fully bottle feeding for several reasons. I have been reading up on how to prepare bottles and keep reading that the formula shold be mixed with water above 70 degrees as there is sometimes bacteria in the tins of formula.

My question is... how many people actually do this? All of my friends who have formula fed their babies have filled up enough bottles for the day with boiling water in the morning then used the bottles over the day adding the formula to the cooled water so never using water above 70 degrees to make up the feed.

I hope this post makes sense!

Thank you in advance for any advice :)

Oh lovey - I am so sorry to hear about your Mum, not that there is ever a good time to lose your Mum, but that must be one of the absolute worst times :( What a terrible time you have had. Your post doesn't sound selfish at all! You have coped really well.

I get the feeling that in time you would be sad you didn't persevere with BF DD2 as you did with DD1. So, to avoid that I think you need to try everything to keep BF. Have you tried nipple shields??

Thanks everyone for 've your support it has been a horrible time as we,ve had to cope with so many different emotions as well as my hormones!

I did get a thermos today and had the water ready but made the bottle too warm so will adjust my quantities tomorrow.

I have tried nipple shields but just can't get on with them. DH and I have agreed to decide what to do after the weekend. Today has been a little better but she's been feeding every two hours and still took 6 oz of formula.

Thanks again for your support :)

I think lmj is okay, no? She says cool rapidly so presumably is making them up with hot water and storing in the fridge (which is in accordance with guidelines) rather than just cooling the water which would be bad.

Always make them up by mixing the formula with water over 70 degrees to kill the bacteria in the formula, you can make them up in advance by keeping them in the fridge and heating them in the microwave as you use them throughout the day.

I know someone who's baby got very ill because she was to lazy to make it up properly and the child still has stomach problems to this day, the risk may be small but it's there and it's not worth it.

MessNessPess · 25/02/2012 22:15

I make it as Fraktal does, using less hot water if a smaller feed volume. So 1oz to 3 scoops and 2ozs cold water.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee what are you talking about?? I mix it with water 70 degrees? And then I put the bottles in freezing cold water to rapidly cool them and then put them in the fridge to cool?

LiamsMummyJaz · 26/02/2012 07:48

Sorry just put in the fridge not in the fridge to cool.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 26/02/2012 09:31

LMJ - Actually - I've no idea? I think I mixed part of your post up with someone else's?? Sorry x

LiamsMummyJaz · 26/02/2012 11:35

I don't really explain things properly in your defence! I know I don't do it 100% right. But I've only ever got 4 made up and they are never in there for more than 18 hours. There's so many ways to do it! It didn't half confuse me Grin x

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 26/02/2012 12:16

LMJ - between the two of us we seem to have caused a bit of confusion Grin

Anyway, the way you do it is the best way to do it, if you can't/don't want to make them up one bottle at a time. I make them up one bottle at a time because I don't mind doing it and I find it just as easy to do that as it is to heat one up out of the fridge - I don't believe it makes much difference either way, the critical part is that it's being made with water at 70deg (not hotter) and it's either being made fresh or made, rapidly cooled & stored properly :)

I get the impression everyone else is bored by this discussion now Grin

LiamsMummyJaz · 26/02/2012 14:15

Haha too true!

Weathers nice today? Grin

donotunderstand · 26/02/2012 18:33

I'm not bored by ur discussions at all! Thank you everyone for all your good advice and help, i made the perfect temp bottle first time today so was very pleased :)

We have decided i will keep the bf up til her first tooth appears then formula may be our best option as otherwise i may loose my nipple!

Thanks again everyone x
