How can I tell if my 3mo is getting enough BM??

DD is 3 mo now and have noticed that she isn't feeding as long as she use to!! It's very hard to determine if her nappies are wet as she has alot of dirty nappies and have to change her so frequently! Having her weighed in 2 wks so will get a better idea if she is taking enough!

I also don't know anymore when she is hungry! Her cues have sort of disappeared!! Breast only feel engorged in the morning as she is going longer at night but only feeds from one breast per feed!!

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Also wanted to mention that DD sleeps alot too!! This is why I find it so hard to determine whether she is hungry or tired!! How many hours should she be sleeping a day??

Have to add that she wants to sleep but never sleeps for that long in the day that is! I hope I haven't made it confusing!

FWIW, my DD sleeps a lot at 3mo. And they do get quicker and quicker with the feeds. It's nothing to worry about.

Just to add, is she happy and content when she's up?

Gina1981 · 23/02/2012 12:21

I guess she is!! She plays on her playmat and smiles etc!! I just spend most of the day trying to figure out whether she is hungry or tired! Problem is I offer her the breast and then she falls asleep!! So I'm hoping she's not getting use to the breast putting her to sleep as whenever she is at the breast she always falls asleep!!

Don't worry about the falling asleep on the breast thing. It's a natural function of bf. I remember they told us in NCT classes that bf produces oxytocin that puts both mum and babe to sleep. They'll out grow it themselves. (My 10mo has definitely outgrown it now. She'll bite if she's not interested in feeding). If you really are worried, you could try getting your DH/DP to put your LO to sleep sometimes with cuddles. That way, she learns to fall asleep with a different method?

Is it normal that DD opens her bowels after pretty much every feed still?? I thought they only did that when they were newly newborn??

sounds normal, at around 3 months babies digestive system changes and becomes much more efficient than before. wrt dirty nappies, some go more often than others.
