Painful breast / nipple - thrush or nerve damage maybe?

My right breast has been really painful for the last couple of days, mainly around the nipple and areola. It feels like someone is sticking thick needles into me. It's not constant, but comes and goes throughout the day and is particularly bad for about two hours after feeding. While DD is feeding from it, it's fine.

It has always been the less favoured breast - doesn't produce as much milk as the left and slightly more uncomfortable to feed from.

DD is 5 months and is teething. She has a habit of pulling back while clamping down on the nipple and did it quite hard the day before yesterday which is why I wondering whether she has caused a little bit of nerve damage?

The other alternative I have considered is thrush or mastitis? Although there is no sign of it in my other breast or DD's mouth.

Any advice?

Thanks

Go and get checked for deep breast thrush!
I had the same problems but went on for weeks thinking it was the latch - everyone thought it was the latch until one amazing NCT specialist suggested it and gave me a link as I had to print out something to give to the GP.
Ive just had a look on google and found it here
I wish I had known or been diagnosed earlier as I went on for months with pain until I finally gave up and formula fed. DD is 6 months old now but I still feel quite sad and bitter about it all. Sad Hope it helps.

BTW - there was no sign of it on either me or my baby. But it cleared up within an week of the treatment and all pain stopped.

I had nipple vaso-spasm. Sounds funny, soooo wasn't; its worth googling since I was repeatedly treated for thrush I didnt have. It was worse in cold weather but ibuprofen really helped.

This might help you work out what is causing the pain. You can also call one of the bfing helplines too for help from a bfing counsellor.
