Cows milk protein intolerance?

When DD was very little she had awful colic, greeny poos and was sick a lot. I stopped eating dairy and things seemed to improve, so we assumed it was CMPI. It turned out she also had a tongue tie however - so it could have been that, with it improving because she was working out how to feed despite the tongue tie.

Anyway, this month (she is nearly 8 months) I have re-introduced dairy to my diet, and there was no change to her.

The last couple of days I have tried her on butter (no change), and then yesterday she had a small spoon of yoghurt - today her bottom is red and shiny between the cheeks, not spotty. Obviously I've given her plenty of nappy free time today, and some weleda cream when in nappies.

Is this redness linked to CMPI? Or do people think it might just be teething?

I would love to get her eating some dairy as extra calories in her BLW, as she's not keen on nut butters or meat, so she's mostly eating veggies and fruit...

I think it is unlikely that the yoghurt has caused the redness - I was advised to wean my 13 mo dairy-free toddler with yoghurt first as it is a pretty 'low diary' food. Given that she only had a teaspoon, I think it is probably coincidence. Perhaps try a bit more and then take a view.

Good luck

Could be I guess, but could be lots of other things too. If you're not sure, you can go back to being dairy-free for a few weeks, then try dairy again and see if you get the same reaction?

If she's still BF, then she will be getting all the calories she needs from the breastmilk so personally wouldn't worry too much about that. At her age most BF babies are not eating many solids and that is fine! Offer a wide variety of foods and she'll choose what she needs.

Hmm thanks. - What reactions did you see with your baby?

theboobmeister yes I do know that really she gets most of her calories from breastmilk, but I worry as she's only 9th centile down from 50th over the last 4 months.... she looks in proportion though...

DS projectile vomited with diary and had diahorrea. However, there are so many possible symptoms of CMPI that if it were me, I would give more diary (i.e. half a yoghurt at a sitting for a few days, followed by a full yoghurt a couple of days later etc) and then watch for symptoms. DS's paediatrician also recommended rusks/biscuits with diary in as an initial 'weaning onto diary' food (most have diary in them). You could try these too?

Good ideas thank you :)

I think I'll take her back off dairy for a week, then try with a biscuit and then yoghurt again next week. I don't think my diet is affecting her anymore, which I think is a sign that she can tolerate at least small amounts...

Yoghurt is quite acidic... If she's prone to being sore (under the weather, teething etc) it may be her skin is just a little over sensitive currently?

Hope she's outgrown the cmpi!

LittleWaveyLines · 23/02/2012 09:06

Well she is prone to getting sore, and I use creams way more than I should given that we use cloth nappies....

So yesterday she had a bit of butter, but no other dairy, and today her bottom is fine.... is butter cows milk protein free as it is dairy fat?

Well I had milk today for the first time in MONTHS in my tea - and it just tasted WRONG! Grin (Have introduced dairy back by having butter, then yoghurt, then cheese...)

Def CMP in butter.

We gave up on cloth nappies in November when ds was 4m. Every time I put them on him they made him instantly flare up. Broke my heart. However, I use Aldi nappies now which are great for his skin and as cheap as chips used to be!

Maybe it's just that the yoghurt was too acidic then and the CMPI is resolved? Confused What's she like with fruit? Does she find that acidic too? Or tomatoes?

LittleWaveyLines · 23/02/2012 15:35

Hmmm fruit is ok. She has only licked tomato - doesn't seem keen.... might have been just a teething thing, or yoghurt being acidic!
