Lump in breast

I ebf my DS who is six weeks old. I've just fed him for over half an hour from one breast. The breast feels empty aside from a big lump. It's quite painful to touch. I guess it's a blocked milk duct? But what do I do now? My DS wont take the breast anymore. He will only take the other one! I'm worried this could lead to mastitis... Any advice would be welcome!

Try massaging the lump in a warm shower pushing towards the nipple as this can help unblock the milk duct

Thanks I will try that

Or even massage it in a warm bath, fully submerged under water (apart from your head, of course!).

The massaging and warmth already suggested should help, but if you can persuade baby to feed from that boob too, it'll help. Particularly if you can get the baby in a position where his chin is towards the lump (may involve some contortions on a bed!).

If you develop a temperature or flu like symptoms, or the pain gets worse or the lump doesn't clear in a day or so, please see your GP or midwife.

Blocked ducts are often caused by feeding with a poor latch. Even if you've been feeding without problems, babies can get a bit lazy with their latch, leading to milk ducts not being properly drained.'if you can get to a support group and have some help making sure the latch is as good as it can be, you might reduce your chances of more blocked ducts.

I hope you clear it soon Smile

Thanks everyone! It feels a bit better already and he is finally accepting both boobs now so fingers crossed it will clear
