My one week old is breastfed she had 2 formula top ups at the hospital because of jaundice but none since and ha only had breastmilk for the last three days.

Her poos are bright green like pesto...is that normal?

Also She has been feeding very frequently the last 24 hours and i seem to have loads of milk but after about 10 mins she sort of flops back with her mouth open and milk dribbling down her chin like shes totslly stuffed but my breasts still feels like theres quite alot of milk left and she wont open her mouth fir any more she just clamps it shut!.

My last baby would pretty much drain both sides at each feed but my new one seems to struggle with one. Is that ok?

She is only small ( was 6 pounds at birth, was 5 pounds 8 at 5 days). So could it be just that shes little?

Think the green poos are a sign of too much fore milk so its possible she is filling up on that and not getting the nice nutritious hind milk? Could you express some before feeding to make sure she is not only getting fore milk?
Am sure someone Will be along in no time with better advice but iirc that was the advice with dd2 16months

Dirtydishes - Has baby's poos ever been yellow or did they change from meconium to green and stayed the same?

How many wet nappies is she doing a day? How many poos?

Dirtydishesmakemesad · 21/02/2012 10:43

She has never really had yellow poo, she had one which had maybe a little yellow in it but pretty much all of them have been bright green.
She is having about 3 or 4 poos a day and maybe 6+ wet nappies. She was jaundiced at the hospital and she still looks yellowy to me and her eyes seem a little yellow but the midwife said on the day 5 visit that she seemed ok and wasnt worried.

Dh is thinking we should give her a bottle again since we did at the hospital but im not sure as i dont want to interupt the breastfeeding for no reason?

messymammy, it's a common myth that green poos are a sign of 'too much foremilk' but this is very rarely the case and would almost certainly not be the case with a baby of this age.

dirtydishes, bright green poo at this age needs checking out, which you have done so, ad this shade of green could be the result of the formula still.

It would make sense to have her weighed, though the weight loss at 5 days was within normal limits.

No reason at all to give her more formula on what you say here. You do need to see a midwife soon, though, I think, for reassurance, for you and your dh.

You said she was feeding frequently, is that sort of hourly or 2 hourly or...? (I use sort of because babies can't tell the time and don't feed at multiples of 60 mins!).

If she isn't feeding 8-12+ times a day (and tbh I'd be aiming for 12+ if she is jaundiced) can you do skin to skin and retreat to bed with her and feed at the slightest hint of hunger (see here for ideas of what to look for) and if she goes longer than 2-3 hours trying to wake her up to feed her.

Also, are you due a MW visit today? If you are, you can go over with the MW your plan to increase intake and see what they think. If you aren't due a visit, could you call the CMW and talk through what's happening with baby just to make sure they are happy with her?

Not saying there is anything wrong but 7 days is very young and if she has jaundice you don't want to let her get too sleepy to feed so frequent feeding is a way to help flush the biliruben out of her system (that's the stuff that causes the yellow tone)

Tiktok- when we were in hospital she had three blood tests the first showed a higher than normal level of (whatever they measue?!) but lower than what they called the treatment level the second which was on day 3 showed a higher level but still below the treatment level and the third later that day showed levels fallen very slightly but they said any fall made it ok and we were finally discharged!.

Truthsweet - she has been feeding the last two days very frequently indeed. She was going lnger before that (maybe 3 hours) but the lat two days she has been feeding at least every two hours in fact its hard to say because she always wants to be held close so she sort of feeds for 10-15 mins then falls fast asleep or just like to lie there looking at me for a while. Then she wakes up after say half an hour and has another little go for a while. She has longer feeds after more sleep but at the moment she seems to just want to be always be held and sort of pop on and off as she feels.
My older daughter did this as well but i cant remember to what extent?

The midwife is not coming until thrsday at the moment.

Those blood tests were prob for jaundice, dirtydishes, is that what you mean?

Your feeding sounds fine - this is what babies should be doing :)

I think it makes sense to have her weighed on Thursday. You could always call the midwife before then for an update if you are worried about the 'look' of her. I am not sure why your dh thinks she should have formula?

TruthSweet · 21/02/2012 12:04

If she is being held close and is feeding when she needs feeding that is one of the best ways to clear the jaundice. A bit of sunlight is also a way of breaking down the biliruben so a sunbathe in a window may help too.

It's normal and GOOD she wants to be close to you - wouldn't you be worried if she cried every time you picked her up? Little and very often is good too as her tummy is only small.

Going longer between feeds may well prolong the jaundice so it's good your DD knows what's what and is requesting lots of feeds - clever baby Grin
