EBF baby--no water, even in 85 degree heat?

My six-month-old is EBF, but will take a bottle of expressed milk or even camomile tea to soothe his silent reflux.

We're currently on holiday, the temperature is 85 degrees, and my baby was constipated and obviously a bit dehydrated today, despite extra feeds. We're keeping him out of the sun, and in the a/c as much as possible, but could I offer boiled water as well?

If he's not on solids, then yes no water. Just offer more nursing seasions. The problem with giving water if they aren't on solids is they can fill up on water and not get enough milk, this also disrupes the electrolic balance in very young baby's can acctualy be dangerous. Your milk and the way your baby feeds ajust to the temp so nursing little and often is the best solution.

Ovously if baby is taking solids then offering water along side any solid food then feeding BM inbetween as often as possible is the best way to go.

But don't forget you need to drink more to compensate for the extra fluids baby will take.

Is he is pain with the constipation? Is he on solids yet?

Can't really see the difference between camomile tea and water for this purpose? Have not been in this situation myself but was on holiday with a friend and her 3-month-old EBF DS in a hot place - he became severely constipated (no poo for DAYS) and she was advised to give him cooled boiled water. If you give it after/between feeds (at least an hour before) he shouldn't be too full for milk at feeding time.

A/C is very dehydrating. It just sucks the moisture out of you. I would keep the a/c off as much as possible (85 isn't that bad, it should be bearable if you keep blinds or shutters down, especially if you have overhead fans).

I definitely wouldn't give water unless on solids and then I give water at meals only.

Little and often is the best way to go. DS was 9mo in January which is full summer here and even then he was feeding 2 hourly, just a few gulps of water. We also still feed at night because I get incredibly thirsty in the a/c so it must be worse for him.

well - shame your friend was given such outdate and possibly dangerous advice espicaly for a 3month old.

Aboriginal, African & Indian babies managed to survive without bottles of cooled boiled water Wink

We passed on sips of water yesterday, but we did start solids today :o Does that mean I do offer sips of water now, regardless of the temperature, or just keep offering more feedings?

Personally I offer water in a cup with food but boob outside those times.
