How to make formula in a sippy cup?

I just need a few easy questions answered please. My 8 month old has been entirely breastfed up until now, and I have just started introducing formula in a sippy cup, which she is taking fine (yay!) I've been using the cartons, because they are easy to just put into the cup and give her at room temperature. But I'm sure its cheaper to buy the powder so that is my next step. Here are my questions:

  1. Do I need to use cooled boiled water with the formula?
  2. Once it is made how long is it good for? and can I refrigerate and reheat?
  3. If I plan on going out for the day, do I have to bring a thermos of water, or can I just source water from a tap/bottled water/etc?

(As a sidenote, I cannot express as it takes me an hour just to get the tiniest bit. And I am still breastfeeding in the evenings and night feeds, these formula feeds are just to supplement 1-2 day time feeds)

  1. you need to use boiled water that has cooled in the kettle for at least 10 mins and no more than 30 mins as the water must be above 70 degrees when mixed with the powder. I use a small thermos and keep the water in it ready for the next bottle so you don't have the 10 minute wait with a screaming baby!
  2. once made it needs to be used within 2 hours. If you can't make the bottle when needed you can chill it quickly under running water then store in the back of the fridge for 12 hrs but it's best to make each bottle fresh.
  3. if I go out I take the hot water in the thermos and measure the powder out into a pot then mix when required. I just ask for cold water wherever I am to cool the bottle. Or just use a carton and take a thermos of hot water if you aren't going near a cafe, etc. If you google preparing formula the DOH and Food Standards Agency have done a PDF document with all the info in. HTH :)

This is the thermos I have; it's fairly compact and you can warm/cool the bottle in the white container -

Those are all the guidelines about making up bottles but I can promise you your baby will be fine if you make up the bottle and she has it more than 2 hours later. I used to make mine up with water just off the boil if I was intending on going out all day. Sometimes I would use an insulated bag if it was really cold out.
