Was wanting a bit of help- my SIL is pregnant with her second and expressed an interest in a nursing cover. They're really not my thing but SIL feels it might help her bf for longer this time, as she never bf in public last time as she felt too embarrassed.

Anyone who's used one- did you have a plain or patterned one? The patterns all seem so loud and rather eye-catching (surely not the point?!) And which one- some have rigid wires at the top so you can look down and others don't...?

Bebe au lait have the wires (probably other brands too but that's the one I had)- in my view that's the only reason to get a cover rather than use a muslin - the wire means you can see the baby properly and the material doesn't fall on the baby's face. Also it is secured around your neck so no falling off.

As for the patterns - yes they are noticeable but I don't think the point is to pretend you are not bf - it just gives you that bit of space to help the baby get latched on comfortably. I found it so useful when dd was still little and I still needed my whole breast out to manage the latching on bit!

coldcomfortHeart · 12/02/2012 21:55

Thanks, hadn't thought about the wires being the whole point! will have a look at the bebe au lait ones.

I have a bebe au lait. It's a black one with white flowers on it. I like it when I'm wearing wrap dresses. I don't like the look of half my chest exposed when feeding ins dress.

OneLittleBabyGirl · 12/02/2012 22:06

Oh and yes it's obvious what it is if you know what it is. But I don't think most do. The wire is very handy when positioning. And it doesn't fall off when you move around. (Unlike a muslin). At least with a dress it's very hard to undo if I'm holding DD. So what I do is put the cover on. Undo the front of the dress. Stand up and pick baby up from pushchair. It's very hard to be discrete unless you have something that you know its secured around your neck!

Thanks onelittlebabygirl, good to hear about the features you found useful- hope it will help SIL feel a bit more confident.

I hated bf-ing in public. Tried various methods to cover - Bebe-au-lait hands down the best. Over priced but worth it!

MrsDobalina · 12/02/2012 22:39

I had a bebe au lait one that had a lovely black and white japanese type pattern on it. From across a cafe it looked like I was wearing a nice top (certainly was prettier than most of my shabby clothes Grin). I even had a few people compliment me on my top not even realising there was a baby under there! Not tried any other brands but I thought mine was fab.

My friend had one that had a cow print on. I'm not sure I would be brave enough to use that!

BertieBotts · 12/02/2012 23:35

My friend had one which says "Feeding in progress" on it Grin - no mistaking that one! She said she felt she got more looks wearing it, but she was at least confident that they couldn't see anything.

JumpinJellyBeansOnToast · 13/02/2012 03:27

Used the bebe au lait one too. It's a bit pricey but I reckon I got my money's worth by not having to get nursing tops or lots of vest/loose top combos. Could pretty much wear most things I already had and it had the added benefit of reducing distractions for DS when feeding out and about. Mine was a patterned navy one. To be fair I didn't care one way or the other if people knew I was feeding. I just like the freedom of being able to reposition his latch or soak up flying milk without worrying about flashing the general public.

poppycat04 · 13/02/2012 04:06

Hi, at the beginning I used a plain black bebe au lait one. You can get plain colours on mothercare website. Hth.

PrincessScrumpy · 13/02/2012 13:38

I have a Bebe Au Lait one in brown with turquoise swirls. It doesn't bother me if people know I'm bfing I just don't want them to see my nipples and having twins they are out a lot! I love this cover and feel so much happier feeding in public. I fed dd1 while out and just dressed cleaverly but she would latch well, the twins are on and off, particularly at first as they were prem. Love this cover, so easy to use.

DomesticGoddess31 · 13/02/2012 18:34

I have the same one as PrincessScrumpy and I too love it. Again, didn't use it to try and cover up the fact I was breastfeeding, just wanted to hide my nipple as I found I had to get my whole boob out to get DD latched on (another prem). I can do it in the dark with my eyes shut now though and DD plays with the cover too much (8mths) now so I no longer use it but I will definitely use it again for the next baby. I don't think I'd have had the confidence to feed in public without my cover tbh.

coldcomfortHeart · 13/02/2012 18:48

Thanks for all the comments- as SIL isn't one for patterns on anything else (v conservative clothes, neutral home decor, etc) I'll just go for a black one. It has been interesting to hear your reasons for trim them in a non bunfighty thread for a change- these cover threads have exploded before!

For using them

I've got one from freedom babe. www.freedombabe.co.uk/store/category.php?id=17
I think they are the same as bebe au lait but cheaper and plainer.
It looks like the plainer bebe au lait ones are double thickness and as I get really hot when feeding I thought these would be better as they are only a single layer.
They definitely make me feel more confident feeding DD2 as I have very big boobs and hated feeding DD1 in public.

EdelWigan · 06/03/2012 22:20

I loved my nursing cover and wouldnt had lasted breastfeeding as long as i did without it. I got mine at www.confeedential.com although the bebe au lait ones are great too, I think they're a bits more expensive.

Yawner247 · 06/03/2012 22:30

I have a bebe au lait one too...I didn't know you could get them until after having my lo...hadn't seen/heard of them so ended up with a very bright spotty one that I wouldn't have chosen but it was the only one in stock that I could take away that day!! Grin use it loads and lo is coming up for ten months. I once had someone say to me if your cold I can shut the door for you...she was mortified when I flashed my feeding bambino! I've also had a number of men comment how great it is that I can feed in public without making them embarrassed, i tell them it's for my dds benefit not anybody else's (she is incredibly nosey)! My friends and family refer to it as my magic cape! Hope your sil gets on well with her cape Wink xx

Yawner247 · 06/03/2012 22:32

you're Blush

babybrains · 07/03/2012 21:25

Another vote for bebe au lait here. DD can get very fussy when latching on and the cover means I can see what she's doing without flashing anyone. I find it most useful for feeding round at inlaws and friends houses etc. as I don't want to embarrass anyone but neither do I want to retreat to another room and miss the rugby!
