Similar to another poster, am not in the UK, so didfferent rules apply.

Dd2 born Weds morning, after long labour ended in ventouse delivery. Waters broke early, put on anti-biotics, very heavy epidural (Hmm) slowed things down a lot too.

Latched on straight away, latch on left fine, but on right sore.

Milk came in last night but she has still lost 8% of her body weight since birth.

She is vv sleepy and I cant get her to feed enough or efficiently. She isnt doing a whole lot of sucking (some). I think my supply is effected as milk is there but not that engorged.

Supposed to go home today, but they want to keep us in another night. Feeling a bit teary.

How can I get her to feed more often and more effevtively?

Hi flyingcloud, sorry you are down about this.

Have a read of the middle section of this. It gives you some tips to encourage a sleepy baby to feed. is a Dr Jack Newman clip which shows the breast compressions.

I would also suggest lots of skin to skin, switch nursing (ie. offering one breast, then swapping to the other and back again) to get your supply going.

Can anyone there help you with the latch on the sore side?

Hope things get better today and you can get home soon.

flyingcloud, good suggestions already.

The essential is you have your baby snuggled up to you as much of the time as you can, day and night. Does your hospital 'permit' this?

You need to be hand expressing colostrum now too.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 11/02/2012 10:18

Might be worth stripping her off before a feed so she doesn't get too warm and snuggly and falls asleep x ( obviously don't let her get cold but if she's not as Cosy she might be awake mire too feed)

flyingcloud · 11/02/2012 12:27

Thanks all, we have done lots of skin to skin. I keep her with me as much as possible. Hospital are good about this.

Milk is in and I kept her on the breast as much as possible while waitin, as I thought she was getting her colostrum. I am hand expressing too. I am going to ask about pumping and syringing too, a boost of energy without having to work for it might help?

I have only had very mild after pains so was worried that that's'another sign that she's'not working hard enough or long enough to stimulate let down.

Thanks again.

Perhaps u could speak to the breastfeeding councellors about whether using a dummy would her strengthen her sucking reflex x my dd had a pretty week suck and tired whilst feeding ( but was ff so might not apply to bf) and a dummy really helped x but check with an expert first as I think opinions on this vary x

Finallygotaroundtoit · 11/02/2012 13:49

I think 8% is normal and if your milk has only just come in I'm not sure you need to do anything in addition to keeping her close and feeding at every sign that she wants to.

Keep an eye on her wees and poos and get some help with the sore side

I don't think they can keep you against your will - where ever you are ?

InvaderZim · 11/02/2012 14:00

Flying - has someone checked the latch? I discovered (a bit late) that my DD "looked" as though she was sucking but she was just faking it really well and then falling asleep. Hmm then my milk came in, I was horribly engorged, and she wasn't getting anything. If you're getting help and support I'd just stay in hospital to be honest.
