Just wondering which ones people use (for a 7mo). I think it is lactose that is the problem but sma lactose free gave terrible reflux - I can't find any other brands that do lactose free.

He is currently on infasoy but I've heard that this contains high levels of oestrogen & would like to know if there are any alternatives.

Would be so grateful for advice!

toffee if you think it is lactose intolerance I would push for a proper diagnosis and then a referral to a Dietician. It's pretty easy to diagnose and your GP should be happy to refer you.

Thanks for the reply jilted. GP was supportive of us trialing dairy free and it seems to have been a bit of a miracle cure (wind / ecezma....sleep) but I wasn't sure where to go from here.

I'll give them a call now and ask for the test / referal.

why do you think it's lactose?

lactose intolerance is fairly rare in babies, but a cow's milk protein intolerance is quite common.... obviously the same foods would cause a reaction, so it can be hard to tell.

if you go to the GP they should be prescribing a hypoallergenic formula for you such as pepti, nutramigen or neocate.

Sorry, should have mentioned - DH is lactose intolerant. But interesting to know that the protein intolerance is more common - so maybe I'm going down the wrong route thinking about the lactose.

Do you know if the hypoallergenic formulas are soya based? Just that DH had now got worried after reading about soya.

I feel guilty that I have left it this long - shouldn't have listened to the HV's who kept telling me that waking that many times with painful wind was normal.

Have called the GP, have to call back later when they open their appt slots.

Just remembered the other reason we thought about lactose - we changed him on to a comfort milk because of his wind some time ago, this helped his wind a bit but also made his eczema a lot better - and this is 40% lactose, so it got us thinking.

Hypoallergenic formulas aren't soy based - and there are quite a few different ones out there, a paediatric dietician can advise.

Cow's milk protein intolerance can cause secondary (temporary) lactose intolerance because of damage to the gut so they can appear at the same time.

Thank you so much for these replies, I've scanned the Kellymom article and it looks really useful, and might explain somethings, will read this proerply later. I feel better equipped to go back to the GP now and hopefully have a longer term plan for how to manage this for DS.
