Hi,
My son has a really bad cough when feeding and regularly projectile vomits. He is on gaviscon prescribed but it doesn't seem to be helping. I bottle feed him with cow and gate 1 in the day and 2 at night with Dr browns bottles, he is still just as sick! The Dr has asked for a urine sample, ha! Try getting that from a 10 week old.
Any suggestions and other experiences with this greatly appreciated. My daughter had bad colic, can't seem to produce children without feeding difficulties lol may need to stop at the 2.
It breaks my heart seeing him so uncomfortable all the time.
Help

Birnamwood, thank you for reassurance. What meds were given to ds2? Couldn't get to docs today because of snow but got appt for mon morning. If I go armed with the info of what I want I may be able to give the gp some advice lol.

I went to my gp nearly every day for two weeks untill they referred me! We had tried gaviscon, dr browns bottles, gripe water etc but he was still going from sloppy poo to hard poo, vomitting and severe colic! If your baby is not happy in your opinion and you are not happy put your foot down even if you feel neurotic ( I got told I was by the gp!) and demand a referal. It is not fair for mums and babies to suffer days of crying and vomitting when there are things that can help! The hypoallergenic formula was best for us along with omeprazole and renetidine. Good luck x

Decided that all doctors are idiots IMHO Grin

Little one is really stressed today and I have lost count of the accidents we have had during nappy changes (washing pile is getting rather large!)

Have just ran around to the tiny local chemists as I remembered seeing one box of Aptamil Comfort!! Stuff what they say - it is worth a shot! If this doesn't work I'll go into town on Monday to see what else I can try.... She is getting distraught - and so am I.

Keep you posted :)

Ds2 is on ranitidine only as that seems to have worked for him (at the moment!) my GP this time round seems really supportive and after a chat agreed that the gaviscon really wasn't doing anything for him and was too much of a hassle (bf) so to stop giving it. He seems to not have as severe reflux as ds1 who was on gaviscon, ranitidine and omeprazole at one point. He grew out of it at 9 mths which was SUCH a relief.

It will end, but getting from now to the end can be so frustrating.

dontdo don't stand for that attitude! As I said earlier, my dr at the time accused me of wanting to put my son on drugs so I could get some sleep, er, no, I want to stop my son from being in pain thank you very much. I insisted on a referral, which he wouldn't do so I ended up paying to see a private paediatrician. Best £150 I ever spent. If you can afford to do it (as we could at the time, haven't got two sticks to rub together atm!) then do it. You'll get seen far quicker than going down the nhs route. I think I got an appt for 3 days time.

dontdomornings - you will need some variflow teats for Aptamil comfort. like thesewww.amazon.co.uk/Philips-SCF635-27-Variable-2-Pack/dp/B0012TIYXS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1328896598&sr=8-3 that's because the feed is thicker and it will be hard for your LO to suck out the feed with regular teats & it will clog. Friends used Aptamil comfort successfully for their DD with reflux.

YOu could go one step further than aptamil comfort and order a tub of aptamil pepti 1 from Boots. They can usually get it in in a day or so. It's fairly palatable and is available without prescription but is expensive - I think around £15 per tin. It's probably worth trying for a week or so to see whether there's any improvement. if there is, then you have evidence to take to the doc and if it is cow's milk allergy, then it is in everyone's interest to get your baby onto a suitable feed before too much time elapses, esp if food refusal is starting.

Doctors, gah. If you find a good one you are very very very fortunate. Most of them seem woefully uninformed about milk allergies and reflux in babies.

I cannot believe they told you to water down feeds. This is contrary to all current health advice and could lead to malnutrition in an infant Angry.

Sorry - been unable to get on net due to v demanding dd :) Aptamil comfort worked for a wee while but then reflux came back. Tried comfort with Gaviscon which worked for a bit but now she is just sicking up even more and much more trapped wind and pain so dropped the gaviscon. Happier but both of us seem to need 3 changes of clothes before we venture anywhere on a morning lol. She is such a good shot!!!

She has been in hospital with rotavirus and so has lost a little weight and gone down from 91st to 75th and I think that this is a good opportunity to hassle the docs once more for a different medication. Have been taking her to massage class and last week she was very sicky and unsettled and so was given plenty of advice from another mum who's dd is on ranitidine. Wish me luck.
