co-sleeping question - how do you feed from the 'other' side?

After previously refusing to entertain the idea of co-sleeping my frequently waking DD now seems willing to give it a go but i don't understand how to feed her from the opposite side boob. Do you switch the baby to the other side of you? Or dangle the upper boob down? If so how do you do it comfortably?

I lean over so I'm almost lying on my tummy and this dangles my rather large nork boob neatly into DS's mouth.

With a young baby I leaned over (propped up on my arm though!) to feed from the top side but with a toddler I just haul them over to the middle of the bed (wouldn't do that with a baby under 1y or without letting DH know they were in bed).

When DS was smaller I'd lay him on my chest to feed from the other side (had a fast let down so was doing that anyway) these days I turn myself further on my side with my upper body weight on my arm (the same side I'm feeding from) above his head. It's not the most comfortable position (helps to have a pillow behind) but it sure beats waking up fully/getting up. Hth

DS gets picked up and is put over to the other side of me in a speedy fashion and then falls asleep there.

I always fed baby on my left side first which put her between DH and me and then lifted her over and laid on my right side which is how I sleep. That way we simply dozed off together with her in the crock of my arm on the outer edge of the bed. I've never fussed about not having pillows or her being under our quilt or any of the other co sleeping fuss. DD2 generally went to sleep in her crib in our room or cot in hers when older and co slept bits of the night and lots of the early morning. She early stayed all night unless she was ill.

Thanks for the speedy replies! She's 5 months. What do you do with your bedding if you turn them to other side of you? I keep my bedding bunched around me and the side of bed dd isn't on. DH in spare bedroom since birth as she wakes so often and he works.

Rarely stayed all night.
DD1 never co slept. She was mostly FF and she would come in for a bottle and a cuddle. Then she would be returned to her own bed, she was the most dreadful wriggler!

I do the boob dangle to avoid mucking about with covers- me under duvet to waist height, dd on "empty" side of bed. Arm up under my head and lean forwards! Not as comfy as feeding from the closer side but can still nod off!

startail · 06/02/2012 20:04

I guess if I hadn't had DH to lift up an air pocket I'd be tempted to a single quilt.
DD2 has only ever had a single quilt on her double bed because a double one is very awkward when your little. I suspect the same trick would work for feeding.
DH moaned about lack of sleep, but refused to be thrown out.

I just kinda keep rolling over until the other boob is there. Still feels like I'm lying on my side. (I assume that the top side is the other side?) I find it comfier feeding from the top side rather than the bottom. With blankets I either move down the bed so our heads are side by side or have the quilt at a large diagonal angle.
