I am breastfeeding my 3 month old (very regularly throughout the day, probably every 1-2 hours) and having some work done later this week which I had postponed from before I had DS. I think it is repairing a filling and getting a new one Blush

What should I be asking the dentist? I am worried about what pain relief they use and also about the fillings.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Just ask the dentist, let her know you are BF & ask that your treatment be compatible.

just to add, i had a similar treatment, filliing taken out and replaced and i used the hypnosis/relaxation techniques i learnt pre birth. my dentist was reluctant to use any pain relief due to me BF Shock. it was fine, and i didnt have a numb mouth afterwards!

Hi there,
I had a filling done last week and am BF'ing my 10 week old DS.The dentist told me that having the local anaesthetic was fine and after i had had the filling done he said not to chew on it for 24 hours whereas if i wasn't BF'ing it would be 4 hours....i expect this is being overly cautious
and maybe wrong? Hmm

the Bfn have some info hear www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/pdfs/Dental_Treatment_and_Breastfeeding_March_2009.pdf

Local anaesthetic stays in the area it is injected so its not an issue.

I think with having a filling removed you have to be careful not to swallow anything while they are doing it. My dentist always warms me at certain points and says not to swallow if I feel anything - it is really difficult but I find tensing your tongue helps.

I've had fillings and a root canal done (with lots of local anaesthetic!) while still BF.

My dentist just said it was recommended to use white fillings (composite?) when treating BF'ing woman, so I got a white filling rather than a grey one.

There's not a chance I'd be letting them near me without an anaesthetic!

Thank you all Smile

The pfd from miggril is very reassuring.

I think I was worried as my dentist seemed very casual about having the work done and was more surprised that I was 'still' breastfeeding. Hmm

Don't think I could be as brave as you shelley Shock Grin

I just had a composite filling put in on friday with a local.. DS came along and was unhappy so ended up breastfeeding him while the dentist finished the work! My dentist is lovely.
