Thrush/Mastitis/Grapefruit seed extract

Just a note to recommend Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) for anyone suffering with thrush in their breasts. My son is now 13 weeks and I finally feel that we have said goodbye to the thrush thanks mainly to the GSE.

I was in terrible pain (almost worse than giving birth, bringing tears to my eyes and having to hold my breath when he latched on) towards the end of feeds and afterwards to a point where I was having to take painkillers. It seemed to be worse in the evenings and when I was generally a bit cold. I'd never heard of getting thrush in your breasts. On mentioning my symptoms (burning/shooting pains in both breasts spreading towards my back and feeling a bit cold) to my health visitor I was just told to put another jumper on! It was a breastfeeding advisor who finally confirmed what it was (many weeks later) and told me that I would need a course of fluconazole (loading dose then 2 tablets per day) daktarin for my nipples and miconazole for baby. Unfortunately, this didn't seem to help and so I returned to the doctor who doubled the dose for 10 days. This again didn't seem to help much so I returned to doctor who prescribed me antibiotics for mastitis (although I never noticed blocked ducts or redness). There still didn't seem to be any improvement after the antibiotics so after some investigation on the internet I decided to try the GSE, applying a dilute solution of it to my nipples after each feed. I had had to continue taking the fluconazole throughout the whole thing (to counteract the effect of the antibiotics) but it was only once I began using the GSE that I felt the pain easing dramatically and finally going altogether. The whole thing has been a bit of a nightmare really and I was very close to giving up breastfeeding altogether but now I feel we've turned a corner.

I thought it would be useful to start a new thread for people to share their experience of thrush as it was mainly through looking on mumsnet that I was able to work out why I was suffering so much. At first people kept telling me that the pain was probably down to an incorrect latch or a particularly painful letdown and I thought it would just get better on its own. I wish I'd known about thrush and the best way to treat it sooner as I would have been able to avoid weeks of painful feeding. Has anyone else used GSE successfully? What symptoms did you experience?

hEY, i HAVE ordered GSE that arrived today, we have done those treatments you say fluconazole and oral gel for her that made her sick and not want to feed and cream for me so we stopped the gel and i am now putting gse on us both before and after feed. I really want to know the strength of the gse you used mine is 35% i think and recommends 4-12 drops per 300ml. what solution did you use? how often? what brand would you recommend?

Hi..I bought my GSE from a health food shop because it was easier than ordering online. Its actually pulp, skin and seed so not the pure seed extract. I thought if it didn't work I'd try ordering the pure version. Its BioCare Biocidin so it might be less concentrated than pure GSE. I've been going off the dosage on the packet and been putting 10-12 drops in about 2 floz of boiled water. I've not had any problems with dry nipples afterwards so think the dose I've been using must have been ok. I didn't use it on baby though, as he'd never shown any symptoms. Good luck with it. It seems like such a faff but its worth it if it works!

Thats what really got me down last week was all the faffing and walking round with my boobs out the whole time and just feel like im either putting cream on or washing it off to feed. Dunno if you noticed my other threads re thrush but I have also ordered lactose free probiotics that a few people recommend on various sites apparently the good bacteria help get rid of the yeast and you rub some in babies mouth and keep taking it yourself. Im pretty down about this now. baby has a white tongue and roof of her mouth - not really bad but noticeable and it is definitely making her uncomfortable and not latching like she used to. I think I have had it for about 2 months because the first 6 weeks went undiagnosed as i just thought the pain was due to a crack in my nipple - used to cry out loud with pain and feed her with a piece of plastic between my teeth to bite on through the pain. Like you say it was worse than childbirth- i would rather pop one out every week rather than go through that pain every feed time.

I havent been as thorough with the gse yet this weekend as had daddy home so i will buckle down with putting it on and see how we go if not i might get some of your stuff.

by the by, she fed every hour and a half last night !!!!!!aghhhhhhh

Ooo, sounds nasty. I totally understand about the plastic in the mouth thing, it really is agony! Its surprising that there isn't more information out there concerning thrush and how to diagnose/treat it. Many doctors don't seem to know anything about it and it seems to be left undiagnosed for weeks in many people. Then it becomes more difficult to treat as it gets really embedded. I've been eating natural yoghurt as I read something somewhere about upping my good bacteria but not sure whether that has helped or not. Hope you can get it cleared up soon. If mine returns I'm switching to formula!
