Ds 9mo has had s&d bug for 5 days with persistent diarrhoea - GP says to stop all milk and give just clear fluids (inc juice!) for 24-48 hours. He made it v clear that this includes bm. That can't be right surely?

Hoping that someone in the know can help me out before bedtime feed time? Thanks.

I can't claim to be 'in the know', but I'd be inclined to agree with you.

Will try and find something to back this up. Smile

Ah, knew I could rely on kellymom.

KD0706 · 01/02/2012 18:27

I see you've been given an authoritative link from kellymom.

But just wanted to add my voice - what a load of tosh your doctor is talking. What could be better for your baby than breastmilk! Hope your DD feels better soon.

nextphase · 01/02/2012 18:31

My gut instinct was bm was about the only thing you shouldn't stop, and kellymom agrees with me. BM all the way (with extra feedings), and rehydration sachets if you really want to.
Cows milk on the other hand, can often cause problems after D&V in little people.
Hope he's feeling better soon.

opps. too slow!

ZhenThereWereTwo · 01/02/2012 18:33

Doctor is talking nonsense, bm by far the best rehydration solution and contains anti-bodies to help fight off virus. I fed DD through D&V bug and she didn't eat/drink fluids for 5 days other than bm and she was perfectly hydrated. Just up your bm feeds to little and often and make sure you eat and drink enough too.

Thanks everyone, that's what I thought. Will continue as we have been. DH doesn't quite believe it, however - GP's must surely know what they're on aboutHmm

Just to say I was given the exact same advice and I felt exactly the same as you. My DH, Dsis, Sil etc etc all told me that the GP was right but I knew what was right for my baby so I kept BF'ing, DD was better by day 3 so trust your instincts and feed, feed feed (My DD reverted to newborn feeding and was pretty much on the breast constantly so maybe stock up on some good DVD's Grin

Thanks - I'd love it if only he'd relax that much!. Is obviously feeling grotty and doesn't know where to put himself poor thing. Just hoping we're on the right track now.
