Dropping 11pm Feed - How?!

Hello, DS is rapidly approaching 12 mo and I cannot get him to drop the 11pm feed which we have always done as a dreamfeed. He eats really well during the day (loads!) and has milk at 7am and 7pm, no other milk during the day. The 2pm feed was dropped with absolutely no fuss, just didn't offer it one day.

He has breakfast at 8am ish, lunch at 11ish tea at 3ish as he's at nursery full time.

I've tried:

  • offerring water instead
  • watering down the milk to try and wean him off it
  • not waking him and seeing if he'll go through but he just wakes at around 1-2am for milk instead which is more knackering for everyone
  • I've introduced a pre-bath snack when we get back from nursery as I hadn't changed his food routine in a while and he's obviously a lot bigger now.

None of these things are making a difference other than he is now sleeping through 11pm - he was waking up as if it was a habit - and waking when he's actually hungry at 2am ish.

Is there anything else I should try? Should I just actually not worry about it, he'll drop it when he's ready? I remember feeling the same about a couple of other feeds as he's been growing and obviously he doesn't still feed at 7am and 9am so really I think I'm being PFB but any advice would be really appreciated!

You can't expect your child to go from 3pm to 7am without food, but I agree that his nutrition should not be coming from milk, but should be coming from solids.

Whatever you choose to do is not going to work overnight - you are going to need to persist for a week or two. And yes, he is waking in the night out of hunger (having not eaten since 3pm) and out of habit.

Personally, I would offer a high tea/supper at around 6pm (pre-bath). Obviously alongside this, offer lots of water so that he does not get thirsty. A boiled egg and soldiers, omlette, sandwich, pasta - anything really.

Also, it could be worth asking other Mums at the nursery what they do. I give my children a snack at 3pm (fruit and or biscuit) and then tea/supper at 5.30pm (a meal of protein, carbs and veg + pudding).

Thanks for answering. It really did only just occur to me in the last week or two that he wasn't getting food after 3pm - I think I just got stuck in a routine rut. So I've been giving toast and yoghurt but I uess I need to up my game and give him a lot more.
