drugs to stop lactation/engorgement

I had a meeting yesterday with my clinical team who have suggested giving me something the day after delivery to stop engorgement/lactation, but it all the fuzziness of my head I didn't actually ask 'what'?

Does anyone have any experience? Do you remember the name of the drug? Do you feel you needed it? Reason for that last question is that last time it took a lot of effort to achieve production and no pain or leakage when stopping cold turkey - so I'm wondering if I actually even need a big dose of what I presume are hormones.

Hi. I don't k ow your back story sorry, are you wanting to stop producing milk after delivery?

Yes there are medications but most have some serious side effects so they are not widely used in the UK but are common in China.

My friend was prescribed Parlodel.

Really unusual for anything to be prescribed for this, AlpinePony - long time since I heard of this being done in any circs other than stillbirth. The usual drug for this is bromocriptine (sold under a few commercial names) but this is not really my area, and maybe they do something different these days.

OK, well I spoke to my gynae yesterday and the drug they're offering is Dostinex. I wanted to research it a bit because obviously I don't want to be taking something which is going to have me wailing for 3 weeks with the blues.

It seems to be fairly innocuous - side effects can include euphoria (dopamine like) and multiple ejaculatory orgasm for men! So obviously now my husband wants me to retain it and then pass it over - because clearly I'm going to be in the mood for a big session shortly after birth! HmmWink

I did read once on mn that these drugs are not generally used in the UK for cost reasons (amongst others) - I'm in NL, so perhaps that's why it's different.
