Not enough hind milk ?

My daughter is 7 weeks and ebf, however for the last week has been snacking , feeding every 1.5 to 2 hours but only for 5 - 10 minutes , I can't get her to take anymore . She appears to have lost a pound from 10 to 9lbs(unless I misread the scales previously ), and her poo is slightly green in colour, although not all the time .

She is also really fussy in the evening and seems frustrated at the breast, clawing and crying. I appear to have plenty of milk , and have been winding her often . Sometimes I can express , sometimes I can't , but she has only had expressed milk twice.

I gave in tonight and gave her a bottle of formula , and she gulped 5 oz down and seems so content .

Any ideas ? I feel really guilty .

Arctic - can you speak to your HV about this?
To lose a pound in weight is very serious - you have probably misread the scales but it's wrong to assume that.

The feeding pattern you described - 1-2 hours, 5-10 mins - is fine in itself, and the poo is not a warning sign, in a healthy baby.

The fussiness in the evening is normal, too - don't think you have to wind her, just keep her 'cluster feeding' if this is what she seems to want :)

But check that weight out, and post again when you have a clear idea if it is correct or not.

How often are you meant to see the Health Visitor ?

In our area they run clinics every day, at a different doctors surgery each day. You can go and see them whenever you feel the need. If you have no concerns you don't need to see them at all!

ARctic, you can usually speak to a HV on the phone.

Honestly - you do need to speak to her if you think your baby has lost that much weight - urgently.

Left message for Health Visitor just incase I didn't misread the scales . She only appears to have gone from 7. 10 to 7. 4 to 8.7 1/2 in 7 weeks . Does that seem enough ? She is very alert .

So she has gone from 7 lbs 4 oz lowest weight to 9 pounds.

Within normal limits, as far as I can see.....if you or HV thinks she needs to gain weight more quickly, then try switch nursing (google it or search on here) and breast compression (ditto). But she may be just fine :)

None of her behaviour is unusual in a healthy 7 week old. One suggestion: stop winding and see if this makes things easier in the evening. Our culture's insistence in winding can make babies over-stimulated and cross.
