Ds is 3 weeks. He is pretty calm and feeding (bf) well. Has put on weight etc. Question is, how comes he can do longer stretches in the day than at night? (I'm wondering if it's a motion related thing-being held/carried/pushed in the pram?) And, can I do anything to swap it around? Tia.

This is exactly what my ds was like in the very early days, slept all day, up a lot of the night, sometimes didn't sleep til 2am and then not for very long!! He slept in late into the mornings. Gradually, he started going to sleep earlier and earlier, 111pm, 9pm, and now we put him to be between 7 and 8pm. We help him understand it's night by keeping things dark and quiet, but only recently has he really started to understand difference between day and night and is sleeping for longer stretches. Ds is 10 weeks on sat. Im sure your ds will gradually start to sleep less in day and more at night! The challenge I have now is making sure he sleeps enough in day so he's not cranky and over tired!

Ah. Reassuring. Thank you. Interesting re the dark and quiet at night thing.

At 3w that's quite good! He's still very new, hasn't even got used to being outside you, and you're still getting to know each other. No need to rush into changing an evolving relationship.

The more he eats in the day, the less he'll need at night. if he's going 4h between feeds in the day then ATM he needs to make up for it at night. It's OK to wake a sleeping baby, so you can, if you like, wake him after 3h, give him a feed, and have a play.

If you keep his nights dim and quiet, with no chatting or playing, and his daytime waking hours bright and interesting, he will eventually want to stay awake in the day and not be bothered about staying awake at night.

BTW, congratulations Smile

Thank you. Befuddled brain that I have, it hadn't occurred to me to wake him and feed him. Will give it a go. And... Wasnt trying to cast him aside-just confused about why the sleeping is so different between day and night. It's all so... Confusing...
