Enlarging bottle teats on Superscrimpers

Have just finished watching Superscrimpers.

One of the people showed how to widen the hole in a bottle teat with a darning needle. I was a bit Hmm and think it might be a bit dangerous. Is it? Or am I being a bit silly?
She was doing it so the baby could get the milk faster.

I did that. New baby teats have just 1 hole, then they build up to 3 or 4.

As my babies got older I just made new holes in the old teats.

Why would it be dangerous?

hazchem · 23/01/2012 22:34

I'm not sure why I think it would be dangerous. Like it's opening up the silicon and there might be rough surfaces or something. I was all for writing a letter to channel 4 saying it was dangerous but thought I better check as I wasn't sure.

well, when i were a girl, bottles never came with holes and you had to make your own,.

jus sayin

there is a danger that parts of the teat may come away with the sucking endangering the baby, also the teat sizes are regulated (as such) so that the baby doesn't get flooded with milk as they suck.

Plus teats deteriorate with age/length of use - if you are still using from birth teats at 9m but with 4 holes in the top , the teat has been through umpteen sterilisations and may be weakened and prone to breaking.

genuine question alert!

do you think that advice re: teats and wear is outdated? i know that latex teats degrade relatively quickly, and they easily tear and can be chewed through etc etc

but silicone? i am not convinced and I rather suspect that bottle/dummy manufacturers have simply not changed their advice since switching from latex to silicone because it means they make more money.

that doesn't mean i would advise people to start making holes in bottle teats and stuff, but silicone shouldn't really need replacing after a few months

i wondered about doing this a but as the teats werent that expensive i just bought the next size up, i only replaced mine when they showed signs of wear, ds4 used to bite them and they woudl split. dd doesnt do this and has been on the 6mths+ teats for ages, they must be 6mths old now and are fine, i check them closely every time i wash them and they seem fine so i havent replaced them.

We've had silicon drinking spouts get knackered very quickly from babies chewing so it can happen...

thisisyesterday · 24/01/2012 08:31

mmm but most little babies wouldn't have teeth, and teats may be stronger than drinking bottle spouts?

(playing devil's advocate here)

Don'y you mean Devil's avocado?
