what exactly does a bf peer supporter do?

I am moving house soon and I have been in touch with my new local bf support group - I'd like to go to meet people. Anyway, it's been suggested that I may be able to train up to do peer support - I can only imagine they're desperate if they may want me

What does it involve? Is it just like a buddy system?

I think it depends on the group you will be associated with. Also to a certain extent it depends on what commitment you are able to give.

As a peer supporter I sometimes attend the weekly breastfeeding drop in group. I can accept a referral. This may be an antenatal mum or one who has contacted the feeding co-ordinator with a specific problem. I can offer support over the telephone, or I can arrange to meet the mum at her home or a neutral venue (such as the drop in group).

I can't give advice but offer suggestions and a friendly ear.

Some peer supporters attend antenatal classes and visit the postnatal wards in hospital.

hi suzi2 i am bf supporter to, i was asked by the midwife at my bf group if i would do the training. i attend the group, offer support or give hints and tips based on my own experience as a bfeeding mum. i also attend the antenatal clinic and speak to women there. dont underestimate the value of your experience, who better to offer help and support than those of us who have been there. we have to fight the good fight girls.

lol - I don't have much experience. Still, sounds interesting - I might go for it. Mind you, I'd be posting all the questions on here
