Mastitis worsening. Found out GP has presc half dose of Flucloxycillin

Aaaaargh!
Been taking 250mg x4 Fluclox faithfully since Thursday am but symptoms have worsened and now have it in both breasts.

So I'm googling and MNing away thinking it's been misdiagnosed, what else could it be, have I got the wrong antibiotic (no), I'm just a hypochondriac etc

In desperation I go to the OOH GP and he tells me 250mg is a half dose and unlikely to have much effect on Mastitis. And I have also found out that the recommended course is 10-14 days and I've got, yes, 7 days.

Have new prescription now but really annoyed and still in lots of pain. Should I moan at my GP do you think?

In other Mastitis news, it turns out my MIL has misheard DH and has been labouring under the misapprehension that I have cystitis. I spent the entire afternoon there on Friday. Don't remember her looking askance as I winced my way around. Grin

When I got mastitis a few weeks ago my GP put me on 500mg four times a day for seven days and the mastitis cleared up within three or four days of starting. I did manage to get a same day appointment as soon as the flu-like symptoms started however, so the mastitis might have been easier to clear at such an early stage. Have you tried other things as well? I found that expressing and warming the breast (hot water bottle in my case) helped. Is your DC latching on properly and draining the breast?

I had hideous mastitis and had to be checked for an abscess which thankfully I narrowly avoided......
best tips I can give are:
feed feed feed feed however much it hurts (pumping didn't really help and just made me more sore)
try as many positions are possible - try to put the baby's chin below where the lump is (I ended up lying down feeding him on my side with him "upside down")
lots of hot baths/warm showers where you try to hand express it out
comb it - wierd but it does help - do it in the bath/shower with a soapy comb
hot flannels just before feeding
I had the exact same problem where I was given a "half" dose of flucloxacillin and then it promptly came back and I had to have another 2 full courses to completely clear it!.
Kelly mom has some great tips on it

Thanks for the tips - have been dangle feeding, combing and hot and cold compressing. Still painful today - can't pick her up on the worst side. DD is clearly not enjoying it and has been reallly fussy, waking every 2.5hrs ;ast night; I imagine the taste of the milk has changed, plus my face whilst she is feeding must be horrifying for her. Perhaps I shall wear a balaclava Grin

Oh poor you. I had mastitis return twice because I was only given a 7 day course the first 2 times. I was pretty annoyed about that I can tell you! It's probably worth notifying your GP that they need to read up on mastitis so it doesn't happen to anyone else.

Hopefully now you've got the right dose it'll clear up, and feed feed feed!

nitnatnaboo - Ouch, that sounds so painful, have you been taking ibuprofen (if you can take it when not bfing, as it is compatible with bfing) to cope with the pain?

Have you seen Kellymom.com on Mastitis as it has lots of self help stuff to try (as well as knocking back the anti-biotics!)

Finally on the mend and can move about without wincing!

Thanks for all the ouches and poor you's and advice everyone! Thanks

They said I had that for ages, on my sons 3rd month birthday I was in hospital having an emergency op for a cyst, my ducts were closed, so no milk would come out and basically had turned into cottage cheese! Go back to your doctor and ask for a urgent referral to a breast surgeon. Please go tomorrow. Good luck
