Tops to Breastfeed in

Hi ladies. Never posted in this part of the forums so please be nice :-)

ATM 36 weeks Withy first and have every intention of bf. Yey! But been having a look online for some tops to feed in. Now I'm sure plenty of you will say you can feed them in any kind of top, but I'm new to this and sos baby so some tops for the first days/week/month that makes life/access a bit easier will be required.

But apart from the odd strappy vest top I'm struggling to find something nice and or reasonably priced :-s so does any one have any recommendations of places that do nice/funky but practical tops/t-shirts?!

I wear a stretchy vest top with a top over the top.
Top up, vest down , keep warm & no flashing!

melliebobs · 22/01/2012 20:24

God I must seem so dense but never had to think about the practicalities of it. But that would save a small fortune

Most people do the two tops method, but h&m do very reasonable breastfeeding tops, if you prefer, i think you can get two for about twenty quid.

LittleWaveyLines · 22/01/2012 20:28

Really dont bother buying special tops.... baggy or button opening, with a vest underneath is just fine :)

onadietcokebreak · 22/01/2012 20:31

I have massive norks and yes one up and one down works brilliantly!

chocolateyclur · 22/01/2012 20:48

Yep, primark vest tops.

I used the h&m feeding tops briefly with DS1 but found their holes where too small, and when I had oversupply issues it was like a pressure jet effect. Also, I found them to be more exposing.

nitnatnaboo · 23/01/2012 09:24

YY to Primark long stretchy vest tops + any baggyish top/jumper on top. You''ll save a fortune and be able to use them after. Good luck with the bf, and the birth, obviously. Grin

I bought Primark ones and they all shrunk within 2 washes :( That's what you get for £2! I had M&S ones before, more expensive but they lasted years.

Defo go with a stretchy vest under a normal top though, it's much easier than those nursing tops (with the holes in the armpit, wtf?) and it'll save a fortune.

highheelsandequations · 23/01/2012 15:49

Wrap tops work pretty well too, or anything with a cross-over front.

TerrysNo2 · 23/01/2012 22:04

I have tried quite a few tops but these are the best by far, very simple design and reasonably priced - especially as you can wear them even when not feeding.

Yeah I'm another fan of the two tops method. Although I'd practice before going out!

TeenyLeek · 25/01/2012 21:41

I agree with the 2 tops method, make sure the vest is really nice and stretchy (I get a size or two up of the Primark ones). I have a couple of others that are good designs - boob ones are great but v expensive new. Mine came from a friend but you could check out eBay. Also check out Mama Feels Good. They have an eBay shop for older designs so you can get them reasonably priced and they'll be wearable when you're finished breast feeding too. www.mamafeelsgood.com/

I have one actual breastfeeding shirt with the snaps I love it but for the most part I'm usually am seating a regular tank top with a front opening bra if you can find the magnet clasping one get it but ya you don't need to spend millions of bfing tops just the tank with the lace top and bottom they are everywhere and I have a nursing apron so I don't flash

pinkpainter · 06/02/2012 08:26

I have white and black 'breastvests' (just google it) - they go under your bra so cover up your tummy, then you just lift up any top you have to feed - brilliant!

Latsia · 06/02/2012 08:30

H&M do great snapdown nursing vests that are also lovely and long. I wear those under cardigans etc. I think they are about £15 and you get two - one black, one white.

Nevercan · 06/02/2012 08:41

I got some nice ones from mothercare Smile

nextphase · 06/02/2012 08:47

Worth having a look through some pages at milkchic to see what sort of things off the high street work.
I'm living in Primark, with a couple of things from Next and M&S for when I want to look "nicer"
I dislike mothercare bras, and feel much better in some really well fitting ones from an independent shop - bought them about 6 weeks in.
Enjoy your baby!

lucidlady · 06/02/2012 09:07

YY to the two tops method - has saved me a fortune!

BebeBelge · 06/02/2012 09:13

Absolutely second the vest & top combo! It's very discreet. Make sure you buy the vest tops a few sizes bigger than normal to accomodate HUGE boobs and to make the pulling down of straps easier!

bex2011 · 06/02/2012 09:40

Yy to the two top and primark vest approach! I've got a selection of primark vests that have been worn day and night for the last 11 months and they have survived all the washing and tumble drying. I find wearing a jumper or top that I can lift up easier than a button up shirt or blouse.

WillSingForCake · 06/02/2012 14:01

I do the wearing 2 tops thing too. Bought my vests from M&S and they're still in good condition despite being washed loads.

Good luck with the breastfeeding - it can be hard at first but becomes so much easier and rewarding once you've got over the initial weeks. Any problems come on this forum - its been invaluable to me, you'll get so much encouragement & good advice.

I don't agree with the one vest up one down method.
I tried that last week and it took forever to get the top right whilst holding dd to my breast.
and the bloody thing kept riding up and cutting dd off!
Shock

My latest idea, while it's cold, is to wear a fitted long sleeved teeshirt underneath a bigger teeshirt, and the fitted one will have been doctored thusly:
cut from armpit to armpit across the chest (above the boob), and down the side.
then this flap will be pinned up to the top of the top, and unpinned for feeding.

This will cause so much hassle.
while we're here, how can I remove my breast pad discreetly when I'm pulling down my feeding bra for a feed?
apparently, according to Mothercare, this is more sensible than having bras with no seams on the cup available. Hmm
