Breastfeeding and vomiting ill baby

My 6.5 month DD has been vomiting since this morning. Properly being sick till yellow bile comes up. No diarrhea, no temp, a bit pale and subdued.

My DP thinks I should restrict bf to small feeds. I'm not sure.... what's peoples advice?

Oh and we had started solids via BLW but obviously are not giving her solids today...

I would just let hre self-regulate I think.

She shouldn't have anything other than BF (no water, either)

Has she kept any feeds down? Or do they all come back up?

RightUpMyRue · 22/01/2012 16:41

Still offer the breast, as much as she wants. She may bring most of it back up if she has bug but some will still get through and help to keep her hydrated not to mention the comfort it brings.

LittleWaveyLines · 22/01/2012 16:46

Thanks :)

I think shes kept part of a feed down - was sick an hour afterwards.

I didnt feel comfortable taking her off, but could see his logic! She's being sick so much we've both been drenched several times. I'm really hoping it's not food poisoning - I've tried to be really careful with her food, but have taken roasted veg out and about with me so she's had some when its been a couple of hours out of the fridge...

Are there any childrens bugs that just cause vomiting and not diarrhea? Is this common? She's my pfb!

RightUpMyRue · 22/01/2012 17:58

All sorts of bugs out there to catch, some will cause vomiting, some will cause diarrhoea and some will cause both. The same bug can cause different reactions in different people.

I very much doubt that veg will have poisoned her, it'll just be a bug.

She'll be fine by tomorrow or the next day. Smile

LittleWaveyLines · 22/01/2012 18:04

Thank you - I have a tendency to worry slightly

She's just had a small feed and is asleep in my arms having kept it down (so far)... poor little kitten :(

Medics advice last time we had D&V was to keep offering food and drink during illness. BFing is ideal when babies have D&V as the milk is digested more quickly than formula or solid food, so even if they sick a bit up, they will have got some nutrients. Also it is an antiseptic, and will have any immunity that you yourself have acquired to the bug that is causing the sickness. I would say keep feeding throughout, on demand and don't restrict to small feeds. Don't supplement with water, if you were mostly BFing before this illness you should have enough to keep her going even without solids. Hope she's better soon.

LittleWaveyLines · 22/01/2012 18:12

Oh and shes brought it all back up - about an hour after her last feed.... :(

littlewaveylines if she didnt vomit for an hour then SOME of it will have been digested and will be helping keep her hydrated. just let her feed as often as she wants and keep an eye on how wet her nappies are etc. she should be fine if she continues to bfeed and doesnt have a temp? but watch out for a temp and no wee. treat a tempt with calpol as usual and just let her feed.

LittleWaveyLines · 22/01/2012 18:45

I ECd her after she was sick, and she weed a fair amount - darker in colour than usual and stronger smelling, but not too bad - just like adult wee rather than very pale baby wee, so I think she's a bit dehydrated, but not tooooooo badly.

Thanks for keepin replying - I panic sometimes, and this is helping... :)

DD was bring her feeds up last time she had bronchiolitis. I remember they told me to keep bf to keep her hydrated. Also vomitting for a baby is serious. I can't remember how many times in 24 hours you need to seek help. But do a google on NHS baby vomit should get you to the right page. There are signs on the page for you to look out for to see if things get serious.

Take care.

OneLittleBabyGirl · 22/01/2012 19:04

The sigh all was not well for us was she got more and more drowsy. Our GP was useless. I called NHS direct and they told us to go to a&e. We were admitted and stayed for a week.

Trust your instinct sometimes and get informed about when you need help. I found my GP tends to tell us to give ibuprofen and paracetamol for everything! Angry

LittleWaveyLines · 22/01/2012 20:26

Well NHS direct said A&E because she has brought up bile, but once she's been sick she's back to being happy, so I'm going to stay up with her and just watch how she does. We're only 5 mins from A&E.... last feed at 8 and no sick so far....

OP posts:
4madboys · 22/01/2012 20:34

well you now her best, if she is happy and alert after being sick it sounds like its just a bug and she is fine, but do just keep a close eye on her as babies can get sick very quickly, but am sure you know that :)

let her feed as and when she wants, just follow her lead tbh. does she still not have a temp? she isnt snotty at all? mine are often sick when they have a cold, its not nice on their tummies all the mucous and so they puke it up!

i think nhs direct always err on the side of caution and say to bring in a baby to a&e, which is fair enough. but as yo usay she is happy so just keep an eye on her and hopefuylly you wont get to much puke overnight xx

Gosh you poor thing, its so stressful when your baby is poorly.
My dc3 had bronchiolitis just before xmas when she was 9wks old. She was hospitalised (mainly due to low oxygen sats) & had vomited up most feeds in the 24hrs before being sent to hospital, usually about an hr after feeding as a result of fits of coughing. The nurses told me that alot of the feeds will have been absorbed- breast milk is absorbed so quickly. I took her to hospital when she'd had a dry nappy for 6 hrs & had become too sleepy / exhausted to feed.

I would say in a 6 month old baby, a dry nappy after 6 hrs, or overnight if she sleeps thru the night, defo needs checking out with gp or hospital.

Hope that helps & baby feels better soon.

LittleWaveyLines · 23/01/2012 07:50

Well we took her to A&E in the end as she started looking properly poorly - and she perked up just as we got there! Anyway they didn't even check us in but sent us to an out of hours GP who after a long wait said "there's a lot of it about" and sent us home!

Was nice to be reassured that it was just a bug, and that she wasn't too dehydrated though.

Anyway, she didn't have too bad a night - just slept pressed right up against me , and didn't feed as much as normal so this morning I and stiff from not daring to move, and huge engorged norks! Grin

She's still subdued, but on the mend I think. Thank you people :)

Ha! Perking up on arrival to A&E sounds just like our babies whenever we've taken them to the hospital. But its much better to be safe than sorry.

There is a lot of tummy bugs going round in our area too - at my son's school, daughters nursery. So far we've avoided them...but it'll only be a matter of time Angry

But so glad to hear she's on the mend.

OneLittleBabyGirl · 23/01/2012 08:48

So glad to hear she's getting better. It's such a worry when the LOs are poorly.

RightUpMyRue · 23/01/2012 09:39

Very glad to hear she's getting better. Smile

lagrandissima · 23/01/2012 21:36

Glad that she is looking better! It's so stressful when they are poorly, hopefully you'll get a couple of lovely days now - mine always seemed so relieved and grateful to be feeling better after a bug or illness Smile
