feeding to sleep not working, HELP! 19wo

hi really struggling with this. DS won't go down for a nap in the morning, I have tried varying times etc and he'll fall asleep in my arms but cries and wakes as soon as put down in the cot. DD at nursery 5 days a week in mornings so I am spending all my "free" time trying to get him to sleep, then I give up and have to leave him grizzling under mobile while I shower, and then it's a rush to get lunch done, do tidying and collect her.

Any tips?? no routine, I just put on white noise and feed, then try to sing and walk around if he doesn't settle. He gets very sleepy at breast but is wide awake when his body hits the mattress. in sleeping bag so I shouldn't need to warm mattress? Really frustrated about this as I think he's getting overtired.

And i already use sling loads. Cannot wear sling in shower, ok?

How do other people manage to shower AND get stroppy toddler and tired baby out the door before 9? I haven't figured it out yet, obv.

meant to add, this problem also annoying as it messes up the afternoon - he's sleeping too late in the aft, then is not ready for bed till later, and is grumpy/wants to be held when I'm trying to sort dinner, get DD to bed etc. eg. if he falls asleep after 11, then is up by 12 or one, needs a nap by 3 and then is like to want to sleep till 5... not good.

Could you try putting him down somewhere not the cot? I've found transferring to the bouncy chair tends to disturb him less and reduce the chance of his waking up.

am nervy about safety in bouncy chair in sleeping bag...

Sigh. had visions of 2nd child "falling in" iwth our lives the way people have described on here. Fat f-ing chance.

What are the timings like? My DD2 is 18 weeks & she naps basically every 2 hrs. He won't fall asleep on the way to nursery then?

I shower. Dd1 watches cbeebies & dd2 grumbles ( generally). It's only for a few mins, I figure.

Can you not open the bottom of the sleeping bag and strap him in? It has worked for me. Alternatively, put him down clothed and tuck a blanket round when asleep?

RillaBlythe · 21/01/2012 12:34

Have you tried a dummy?

titferbrains · 21/01/2012 13:30

Won't really take dummy unless in sling ... Ah the irony...

Trying to put him down around 2 hrs after he gets up.

Worth trying the chair I guess.

What about showering before he wakes up ? I'm sure he'll find his rhythm eventually.

dukeofpork · 21/01/2012 13:34

Oh yeah - also putting a hot water bottle in cot to warm sheets and removing it just before you place baby in works for us sometimes.

titferbrains · 21/01/2012 13:59

Unfortunately, showering will wake dd and she can't be left alone with him as she tries to hurt him. Not always, but she's only 3 and can't be trusted. I struggle to get up by 7 , not sure I could face an earlier start. Sounds ridiculous but I truly hate getting up in the morning.

Does feeding to sleep work the rest of the time? I know what you mean about the mornings. We have two of similar ages - I recognise you from other threads - & I have a dread of mornings, trying to get everyone fed, clean, dressed, argh.
