Being used as a dummy. . .

My LO is exclusively breastfed, and or the last few days she's been non-nutritive suckling and using my nipple as a pacifier until she falls asleep. . .

She wont take a dummy or her hand and if I dont let her suckle she cries :(

Anyone else had this?

I would say keep tryin a dummy or try different ones, try placing it in mouth and rocking it gently from side to side to help her latch on. I introduced a dummy this week (I have previously HATED them thought I'd never use them) sooo glad I did cos now instead of breastfeeding back to sleep after waking up in moses basket ten mins of being put in, I use dummy and it works! Good luck.

How old is your DD? How often is she wanting to feed?

They early days can be really exhausting. Don't forget, a dummy is a fake mummy so she's not using you as a dummy, she's doing what babies do. 'Comfort' sucking is important for a variety of reasons. Dummies are not usually recommended for very young babies as there is a chance they can interfere with BF becoming established.

If she's a bit older then is it possible that she's teething or coming down with something?

Here is some information on dummies and BF babies.

when dd was 5wks old I introduced a dummy because she was using me for comfort and I nearly had a break down! she wouldn't take the tommee tippee ones so I got the avent classic orthodontic type, they are a little longer and a bit flatter in shape. I had to put it in dds mouth and then cradle her against my chest while rock her she took it straight away and slept for 4 and half hours, I was scared to put her down or move!

i always said id never use it but withher having silent reflux it was a life saver for us - introduced it around 2 weeks, the orthodontic one - she will not take any other. it has been brilliant - she still uses me for comfort which is great but there are times when thats not been practical and times when ive just needed that pressure off.

also, now at 3.5 months, she spits it out! :)
