The MN nursing top alternative

Carlitawantsababy · 18/01/2012 12:33

Hi, I have seen this mentioned in passing on other threads and wanted to clarify it as am off to Primark in half an hour. Is the MN alternative to nursing tips to buy a load of strappy tops to wear under normal tops? For feeding you'd then pull up the normal top and pull down the strappy top? Sounds like it'd work but I have no experience! Smile thanks!

Its what I do.

MerryMarigold · 18/01/2012 12:35

A nursing bra and a big top

ViolaCrayola · 18/01/2012 12:36

Worked for me too :)

HettyKett · 18/01/2012 12:36

yes, that's what I always did too.

MerryMarigold · 18/01/2012 12:36

(Big top not to cover boob, but big enough to drape down and cover tummy! I imagine getting boob out of nursing top and strappy top would be tricky, but I don't know).

sheeplikessleep · 18/01/2012 12:39

It's good to get the strappy tops that have adjustable straps, so you can set them to their 'longest'

BrianButterfield · 18/01/2012 12:40

I do it the other way - wear a vest under a scoop/v-neck/button top. I pull the vest up and the neck down. Just what works better for my smallish boobs but the same principle.

BrianButterfield · 18/01/2012 12:41

And my way you can wear dresses Grin

Pascha · 18/01/2012 12:51

I do it Brian's way as well. Depending on what sort of top i've got. Also slouchy drapey cardigans are good for pulling round the baby's head a bit if you want to shield yourself more. And crossover tops are easy-access too.

Blobby11 · 18/01/2012 12:57

I used these
breastvest.co.uk/
They worked really well

Carlitawantsababy · 18/01/2012 13:00

Good point brian!
Thanks everyone, didn't want to buy a load and then discover I'd been really thick and it was just not going to work! Grin I will get the ones with adjustable straps, good tip! Grin

I do this too (pull the vest down and the outer top up). I have some great vests from Jack Wills of all places which are nice thick stretchy cotton with a scoop neck and they are also long so can be pulled down over your bum if nec to wear with leggings / skinny jeans and cover your tummy.

BertieBotts · 18/01/2012 13:19

I do it too and I didn't even find MN in the early days so I must have got it from somewhere else Grin

Much more practical especially in winter!

Carlitawantsababy · 18/01/2012 13:20

I've never heard of jack wills monkey but good point on length of tops, I'll go a few sizes bigger than normal.

Thanks bertie, yes, I realise that this is unlikely to be MN specific bit this was how it was phrased when I came across it before so I thought it may help people to know what I was talking about! Grin

That's exactly what I do, didn't realise it was the mn way Blush

Also found that if you have any batwing tops you can just pull the arm hole round the front to feed as well Grin

HipHopOpotomus · 18/01/2012 13:23

Yes that is what I did too - used vests under clothes. Many of the Primark ones werent very stretchy - ideally you want a good 2 way stretch esp in the straps - which need to be able to pull down without losing shape. I like Esprit ones (picked up in sale). H&M maternity & M&S.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 18/01/2012 13:27

'One up, one down' is my rule... which top goes up or down depends on the tops.

marzipananimal · 18/01/2012 13:31

i wore a bump band to cover my tummy, then just lifted my top

coldcomfortHeart · 18/01/2012 13:43

I usually use a nursing vest top from bravado, it's a good supportive bra in a vest top not a shelf bra. Then i lift my t shirt or pull aside my cross over dress and undo the nursing vest at the clips. Saves having to bother with two tops AND a bra, and i love them and they're nice enough to wear on their own in the summer but they aren't as cheap as the MN method!

HipHopOpotomus · 18/01/2012 13:44

ATruth has nailed it!

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 18/01/2012 14:48

[proud grin]

charlatan · 18/01/2012 14:54

These vests have elasticated straps so you can pull them down really easily.

hefner · 18/01/2012 17:30

I use the vests charlatan linked to, they're great, very stretchy and they come in lots of colours.
