teething three month old

aimzbub22 · 17/01/2012 18:05

My baby girl has just turned three months old and for the past few weeks she has been a
Terrible drooler, but in the past three four days she has been extremely irritable and has been passing more bowel movements than usual and they have been green. I didn't know whether the green pop was also a sign of teething. My health visitor said it could be but wouldn't give me a straight answer. Any advice as the green pop is worrying me.
Also I know it isn't a milk Imbalance as I have been keeping her on one side for longer and longer to see of it goes back to it's normal colour and it hasnt
Cheers

You might attract helpful answers if you post in the Breast and Bottle feeding topic :)

Yes, this is in the feminist section and you might get more people seeing your thread if you put it in another part of the board.

Green poo can be a consequence of drinking lots of foremilk. If she is teething and you are breast feeding, she might be breaking off from the breast a lot. Having lots of short feeds rather than fewer long ones means a baby consumes a lot of fore milk and little hind milk and ends up with green poo.

Green poo in itself isn't anything to worry about I don't think. I seem to remember DD1s was green sometimes mmmmmmm. If your DD is otherwise well then I think that's oK.

Drooling is a sign of teething for sure but sometimes it goes on for ages before you get to see a tooth!

Hope this gets moved soon so you can get some more answers and hope your DD isn't too unsettled Smile

TimeWasting · 17/01/2012 18:30

There's no need to worry about foremilk/hindmilk balance. Keeping her on one side too long might reduce the volume of milk she has, so just feed like normal.

OhTheConfusion · 17/01/2012 23:46

Does your DD have a cold? Mucus can come out the other end making poo green.

My DD2 began drooling and rubbing her gums with her toung at 12weeks, first tooth appeared at 14 and now at 18 we have the 3rd one breaking the gum.

I took her to her doctor today. She got weighed and has lost weight and apparently green pop is a sign of a baby who isn't getting enough and have been recommended to start supplementing her. She had been a bit bunged up the past few days but her doctor wasn't concerned about it.
Well today was the day I felt like I had failed. I know I shouldn't feel bad but I feel like I am unable to even feed my daughter. I know I shouldn't feel bad that I have to supplement her but I do feel so bad.

Has she lost weight or just not gained along her centile?

RillaBlythe · 18/01/2012 18:57

Sorry had to post quickly! Don't feel bad - you ARE feeding & mothering & caring for your daughter - that's the important part, & whether you feed by breast or bottle is not. & I say that as a staunch breastfeeder.

SardineQueen · 18/01/2012 19:36

Bumping.

I just out of curiosity took her temperature as I realised her doctor didn't. It is a little below average. Going to keep tabs on it. My mum told me about fenugreek so I'm going to try some tomorrow. She said try it for a week so I will. It was only a little bit of weight she lost, nothing serious. Maybe her doctor over reacted a bit. Scared me though. I still think she is teething even though he said she couldn't be teething this young. Do the front bottom teeth appear as tiny lumps on the back of the gums?

Green poo can be a sign of an infection, scant poo (i.e. not pooing at all/very small infrequent poos) can be a sign of not enough milk. Never heard of green poo as a sign of not enough to eat.

If her temp is low, keep her close to your chest skin to skin (blanket over both of you), your chest will heat up to warm her up and she will be close to her food so may be encouraged to eat as often as she likes.

GodisaDj · 18/01/2012 22:46

Mine started teething at same time. She's now 23 weeks and STILL no teeth. They make their way down the gums so will just irritate her and eventually cut. I'd recommend Nelsons teething powders. They're natural, can get them from boots or health care shops. Alternatively, dentinox or baby bongela.

As for weight drop- please don't worry if LO
hasnt dropped a percentile. What did your gp say? Did they offer advice or just scare you? From your post it sounds like you are doing amazing by ebf'ing to 12 weeks. Smile.

If you are enjoying it, and LO is content (apart from green poop) then continue what you are doing. Of course keep an eye on weight but the "bible" that is the red book isn't the best to measure weight for bf babies (it's graphs and percentiles are based on formula fed babies).

Keep feeding on demand and trust your instincts. Any concerns, speak to HV or GP.

Is there a breastfeeding support group near by so you can discuss the weight side of things? I attend weekly groups and there are scales there but more importantly on tap advice and support with your feeding.

All the best Smile

RillaBlythe · 19/01/2012 08:56

GodisaDJ, the red book graphs are in fact based on bf babies.

GodisaDj · 19/01/2012 23:41

My mistake, I honestly didn't know that Blush. Someone told me so just believed them, had no reason not to believe them.

RillaBlythe · 20/01/2012 07:13

I think they certainty used to be but were changed in the last few years - I would google but on my phone (as u was before hence the brusqueness of my post)

Fenegreek with thistle in it is great i got some from the health food shop and use it every now and then it really makes a difference make sure u drink at least 2liters of water as well and ur milk supply will increase. I am having to breast and bottle feed as my 4week old does both boobs and 100ml of formula every 3 hours i no that i produce around 150ml for each of her feeds as i bottle fed her a full feed and expressed my milk to see how much im making. I felt like a failure as a mother when i had to start formula but now i just tell myself im doing whats best for my daughter.
