No use crying over spilled milk... what about sobbing over sour milk?

Sad Was really looking fwd to going out tonight - first time on my own since dd was born 6 weeks ago. I've been having real trouble expressing so its taken me four days to collect enough to leave her just for a couple of hours but i've just discovered it's all gone off! Sad Can't understand why. It was all in tightly sealed sterile containers at the back of the fridge??? Why would it go off? I thought it was supposed to last five days in the fridge. Oh well, no fun for me. Sad

If it smells soapy it make be excess lipase in the milk (the enzyme in breastmilk to digest the fat in it). This is fine if baby is drinking the milk as it made but if it's stored the lipase can start work on the fat and turn the milk soapy tasting/smelling. Some babies are fine taking milk like this (it's not spoiled or off) but some object to it.

Lots of information here

You could try a test bottle in the fridge (it doesn't have to be more than a few mls) and see how long you can store or you can try the scalding treatment to see if that helps.

Or check that the fridge isn't on the blink!

I can't store mine in the fridge either and found out the way you did! I have freeze and defrost as needed unfortately. It tastes foul doesnt it when its off. Theres no doubt its gone off.

I definately recall crying over spilled breast milk. Half an hour of pumping later and I knocked the pot over poor DS. Wail.

You have my sympathies. I still recall coming back from holiday when DS was 10 weeks to find the freezer had failed. My supply of 24 oz of breast milk had to be binned. Too traumatised to cry on that occasion.

(Ds is now in school. Worry if I am still complaining when he is at university.!)

ps Too bloody cold to go out anyway.

Just a lurker but I've been swearing to OH that LO won't take the bottle because the milk is "off" after a couple of days but will guzzle it down if its freshly expressed, that link has answered a whole lot of questions, thank you!!
