Stephanie - are you sure it isn't thrush? Check inside her mouth, if she's got white spots too, then it could be. Might be worth going to GP but see what others on here say.

Stephanie, call one of the bf helplines and ask about this.

meantime, there's no reason to panic You prob have 'white spot' which is normally just a creamy blockage of milk at an exit point....squeeze it gently or else soften it in the shower/under a shower spray and see if there is skin over it. There may be a very thin layer causing a blind alley. You will need to remove this very gently by rubbing or If you have to) lifting it off with a clean needle. You onky need to do any of this if the white spot is causing a problem - and I think from what you say it is.

It isperfectly safe to feed the baby on that side, and in fact, doing so might mean you don't need to do anything about the spot as it clears irself.

Em32 · 17/01/2006 13:55

Oh and don't squeeze it and do carry on feeding as normal. If it is thrush you can get treatment for it.

tiktok · 17/01/2006 13:55

Very unlikely to be thrush, Em.

tiktok · 17/01/2006 13:56

Why shouldn't she squeeze it, Em? Nothing wrong in that, if it is what I think it is.

stephanie21 · 17/01/2006 13:59

squeezed it!had tears streaming down my face, and it popped.totally yuk!still hurts but not as much.never had this before.its ds'favourite side too!

Slight hijack but on same subject - tiktok - I've got one of these (white spots), had it for a few weeks now, and I keep getting a blocked duct on that side too (four times now!). Ds clears the duct out ok, but it keeps happening, and I keep getting a deep pain going through my boob after I have fed him, and the nipple goes blanched and hard after feeding. Haven't been to the docs as I wasn't sure if they'd know much about it - any suggestions?

(Sorry to hijack stephanie but thought this might be relevant to you too)

stephanie21 · 17/01/2006 14:03

no probs miau, nice to know i'm not the only one with sore boobs!!

You have my sympathy steph, miserable isn't it? Ds is five months too, so I've had pain-free feeding for ages prior to this

Em32 · 17/01/2006 14:05

Tiktok Just my gut instinct not to squeeze things in such a delicate area - I don't squeeze spots anywhere else. But you're the expert......

stephanie21 · 17/01/2006 14:08

miaou,my dd is 17 months and i havent had any probs up until now.have been trying to give up for ages though, and not getting anywhere with it.was told to try the self weaning thing,so am just hoping she'll get fed up of it soon!she has cystic fibrosis and the hosp told me to feed her for as long as poss as its best for her,but not for me!!!!

tiktok what do you think caused it?could it be bad positioning?

OP posts:
tiktok · 17/01/2006 14:14

White spot is not like spots anywhere else - it's just a clogged up 'hole' clogged with cream. Getting rid of it by hand unblocks the duct where the milk has banked up behind. Usually, mothers experience immediate relief as the milk 'escapes' when the blockage has gone.

Doctors will really not have a clue about this, unless they are very unusual! I think you'd benefit from someone seeing you feed, miaou....there may be something going on which could be changed with regard to the positioning and attachment.

Glad you feel less sore, stephanie.

thanks for the advice tiktok, I am very fortunate that my neighbour is a breastfeeding counsellor (how many people can say that that live in very rural Scotland? ) - perhaps I'll see if I can meet up with her and see what she thinks.
