hi,

just a really quick question:

when did you start introducing solids and how did you do it??

My DS is now 6 and a bit month old and i feel he may be getting ready to start on 'big foods'.....

just wondering what other people did because books give you such different opinions on the matter....so i'm just gathering information to make my own mind up!

Mashed banana is great IMO as a first food at that age - no cooking and no pureeing. Also avocado if your ds likes it. Mind you, my ds's first ever food was a bit of his dad's blueberry muffin in Dulwich park cafe - well, he was drooling
You can buy books on weaning though I could never be bothered with Annabel Karmel and her 12-stage dinner party style menus for babies - life's too short IMO. I'd start with fruit and vegetables in puree form maybe with baby rice once a day and then be guided by your baby's appetite. Your NHS baby book given to you by your HV has a quite useful section on weaning IMO.

hi,

thanks for your advice...however i do not have any of the nhs publications as i have not seen any nhs healthcare professional throughout my whole pregnancy or motherhood!
(although they did try to get to me.....but i was sure my health visitor and me were going to have slight diferences of opinion on various matters!

i think you can get much better informed advice through some research in various books and research papers....and boards like this!

keep the posts coming!

Well, I also think you can get too hung up on what your child eats - they tend to surprise you IMO! I can barely remember what my ds ate at 6months, but I do remember he had a passion for sweet potato (baked in a jacket and then mashed with a fork - easy) to which I later added cheese. He also like brocolli cheese and yoghurt with banana or pear in it.

the NCT dfoes the only book that assumes you're starting at 6 months. I've just started and dd is FAR more interested in real food (toast, pasta, ...) than mush - so try things and go with what he wants. Basic rules for this age are no salt, seafood, I think most other things are in.

Good luck and enjoy it!

hi ninja,

what is that nct book called?? any idea?

it does actually bother me, that all the books i've looked into so far assume that you start solids at 4 month....
