Feeding Chair

Hi all
just wanted your opinions....
I have a feeding chair, at the moment its been the biggest waste of money because I seem unable to feed in it.

My DD is tall, and always has been, and the arms on the chair are high, which makes feeding my DD difficult.

We are trying to crack getting her in her own room at the moment, and she always falls asleep lying next to me co-sleeping. I have slept on a mattress in her room the last week and fed her to sleep and transferred her to her cot and fingers crossed she's going down Ok ish (after re-settling her by patting/rubbing her back).

I want to now use a chair in her room to feed her in, but the one I have is useless. Do you mind sharing what you do to feed your little ones in their rooms/what chairs you have - or alternative positions for feeding my little one to sleep?

(sorry for the multiple posts this eve)!

Cheers

I used either of our 2 wooden chairs with arms. They are both old and a bit knackered but worked fine with a pillow behind me. One was a sort of carver dining chair, the other I think I called a captains chair that we usually use as a desk chair.

Main thing was that they had nice deep seats, arms at the right height and a supportive back.

Or, have you tried sitting on a few cushions on your feeding chair to raise you both up above the arms?

The footstool that goes with those IKEA bent-wood chairs that everyone has, and a flat strap-round-my-middle feeding pillow. Just right, for me. I lean back against a cupboard occasionally, but ds only feeds for about 10 mins so mostly I'm fine sitting upright on the stool.

yep, i've got one of those ikea bent-wood chairs that everyone has (poang?). i think it's great. nice low arms - i pop a cushion on one side to help when feeding. i have the footstool too, but mostly just sit on it to put clothes away in drawers etc rather than having the full recline set-up. the chair's just next to DS's cot, so the transfer isn't too bad.

i've fed happily at our surestart centre just leaning against a pile of cushions, but i'm not very graceful at getting up again. maybe if you've got core muscles of steel, that would do?!

good luck...

Another vote for the ikea poang chair, really comfy and you can prop yourself up with pillows/cushions if you prefer being a bit more upright. Our breastfeeding class leader advised us against those special feeding chairs as once baby gets longer they aren't good due to the solid sides; with the poang they can have a leg either side of the arm rest IYSWIM.

If you're a bit shorter like me, then try the Ikea Boliden chair. It's very similar to the Poang but better sized for petite people, it comes with a footstool and it's cheaper!

I actually find the poang chair too laid back for feeding - its a bit of a struggle to stand up again holding a sleeping big lump, hence I just sit on the footstool with a feeding pillow.

I have a feeding chair and big baby, too, he feeds by laying down my belly.

Was going to ask the exact same question- have just brought a chair with arm covers that loop over the top of the rests so DD's feet can't poke out the side (and have just been told I'm feeding her all wrong and making her already bad wind problem worse). Have taken to just feeding her lying down as it is so much easier and she gets less wind. G1nger, how does DS latch on? Does he use his arms to prop himself up? I'm intrigued...!

G1nger · 09/01/2012 15:31

I'll first put his legs either side if my thigh, then lay him flat up my belly until his mouth's lined up to a nipple. I'll use the corresponding arm to go over his shoulder and will rest my hand on his bum. He lays kind of into my arm but also belly to belly. His arms are free, ie not propping him up.

Minicc that's interesting- as since I've been using the chair (with a number of pillows) DD wind has been worse at both ends.

Ginger I have to feed DD like that during the day otherwise she has a paddy! My mum saw it again earlier and laughed because DD was kicking her legs. Mum said its like she still wants to play!!

Thanks all for your responses.
