Another Question - expressed milk

Me again!

Can you top-up expressed milk?

What I mean is, say for example, now I've expressed 3oz. I wanted 4oz. So can I express another ounce later in the day and add it to the 3oz in the fridge?

Thanks again

Yes chacha. No problem. See kellymom.com re. everything you need to know about storage of expressed milk

Here is what I used to do:
Just make sure you sterilise your equipment each time...this is the most important thing. The milk kept in the fridge and its container will remain sterile for quite a while.

The other thing is if you give baby some of the milk out of that bottle, and some is left, not a good idea to put back in the fridge and use again as it may be infected with bacteria in baby's mouth. If your baby doesn't drink the whole lot in one go, it is best to offer him just a few oz at a time out of different bottles to min. waste. I used to divide the expressed milk up into 2 different bottles each time.

There are different views as to how long you can keep expressed milk in the fridge, I would not use it after 48 hours (if you have masses of milk it is best to freeze).

Also never leave in the door or sides of the fridge. Keep on one of the main shelves towards the back where it is coolest. I kept some milk in the door once and it smelt horrible after just a few hours...uuuurrgh !!

Good luck !

Yes but add them together when the additional amount is cold. In other words just put it in the fridge then add it to the other one.
