Really noisy 4 week old has taken to yanking my nipples

my ds is nearly 4 weeks. Until the last few days we've had no problem feeding, weight is fine, generally very peaceful baby. Last 48 hrs he's been on and off me relentlessly, and making loads of noise while feeding..kind of guttural aaaaaaaahhhhh and uuuuurrrrrrrr, releasing his latch, chewing, pulling, ramming his head into my boob, then going on properly for five mins making clear swallowing sounds...and falling asleep. I move him, he wakes and repeat cycle. Nappies are normal, it's just worried me as he's been so placid and now he seems cross. I've been responding to his feeding cues, he nods and roots, but he's been a bit manic with it.
Is this just a stage to go through? or is he telling me something's up? Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

My baby began doing this to deal with farts. If you're getting hurt, unlatch yours.

I'd think of two possible things - either thrush and his mouth is sore so feeding isn't comfortable or poor attachment and he can't settle as he's not getting adequate milk.

Ooh wait - number three - your supply is now well and truly up and running and he's finding that you have so much milk he can't latch on properly.

If this is the case - you could hand express for about 15 secs before each feed to release some milk, softening the breast slightly and allowing him to latch more easily. Smile

Just looked at thrush pictures on the Internet, bleurgh, and checked his mouth, all fine. Think it may be the milk or latch, as his farts are distinctly audible and he seems to be quite proud of them. I will re look at latch and try the expressing thing. Thanks!

I would say it's a growth spurt and he's frustrated. My DD was the same and suddenly packed on a chunk of weight. She was frustrated esp at night as milk supply is lower and slower. It got better by itself, my boobs seemed fuller in the days after.

Sounds like a definite growth spurt to me!! I'm not sure how, but those appalling table manners appear to help them boost your supply. Blithering annoying mind, but it shall pass.

Yeah mine was the same especially evening. In the end I offered a dummy instead to see if he was really hungry or not. He ended up wanting to just suck and was annoyed when milk came out. If he kept spitting the dummy out though I knew it was a growth spurt. Sometimes when they just want to suck they get a too full tummy and makes them uncomfortable.

I also used a bit of dentinox to help with wind when he was especially agitated when feeding and it did help a bit.
