Vomit - What is considered "normal"?

DD is six weeks today and gaining weight well. I had her weighed today and she's gone from 7lbs 15oz to 9 lbs 14oz in three weeks. She's a happy baby and I think she's currently going through her six week growth spurt.

She doesn't posset much and has thrown up only a handful of times. I know this is normal for newborns but yesterday she threw up and today she's thrown up twice. This is pretty heartbreaking when she's going through a growth spurt and you feel as though she's about to break you and you've had to completely bathe her over and over again to get the puke out of her hair!

Do babies throw up more during growth spurts is the question here or should I get it checked out? Any advice would be appreciated!

No idea sorry but am also curious to know so bumping for you.

I think she's got a cold at the mo too so that might explain it as well?

Damn. She just threw up AGAIN! She'd just eaten and I was changing her and it went all over the mat. She doesn't really fuss or anything before throwing up or afterwards. In fact she seems just fine and then afterwards she makes motions to say she's hungry again!

She also possetted one of her night feeds. :(

Could it just be a d+V bug? lasts 24-48 hours (sometimes a little longer)

showtunesgirl · 04/01/2012 13:43

I don't know. She DID come into contact with a 3 year old with a cold a few days ago and she's been cold-y since then but pretty happy really. She's not distressed after she's vomitted either and in fact seems fairly cheerful and smiley!

I'm a bit stumped and just would like to know if this is normal.

Mine was exactly the same, went through a projectile vomit stage but with no warning at all! Are u breastfeeding? If so, it could be your let down of milk- my supply was quite fast but instead of stopping, she'd carry on drinking, then throw up later (nice)! It eased off around 20 weeks partly because I changed the way I fed her (going back on same boob if she hadn't emptied it instead of other boob with the watery milk first). People said you cant oversees a bf baby but in my case I could!! Greedy little mite, shes putting on weight lovely too.

Agree with other posts about potential v&d, lot going round at min.
Also, is she teething? If so, She will ve swallowing saliva and that will make her puke and/give her watery poo and potential nappy rash.

Let us know how u get on x

TeWihara · 04/01/2012 14:02

If she's not feeling well she might be using bf as a 'dummy' - comfort sucking, and then just throwing up the excess afterwards. Very annoying - my DD did this a lot! But if that's all it is it should stop once she feels better.

Iggly · 04/01/2012 14:25

Can you keep her upright and calm for twenty mins after a feed (no jigging) and encourage wind up by rubbing then see how she goes? Don't change her nappy until this time has passed.

Are you bf or FF?

If she has a cold then this is normal. My DS is 10 weeks & is just getting over a nasty cold. I spoke to the doctor about it a few days ago as he had high temp & started vomitting after feeds as well (hence why I was wondering about this thread earlier and am now at computer so can type properly).

Doctor told me it is common for babies with colds to vomit as when they are feeding they cant breath easily through their nose so while feeding they wont latch quite as well and will take in more air than normal and then this can cause them to vomit.

showtunesgirl · 04/01/2012 19:52

DD is EBF and only 6 weeks old so not teething yet.

I believe I have a fast let down though as I had to unlatch her earlier and oh my the spray! I think she's also a greedy old so and so and sometimes takes in more than she can handle!

I think it might be the cold, growth spurt AND the fast let down that's the problem.

Sorry Hun, missed that she was only 6 weeks. Sounds like let down, same problem here. I've found putting her back on same boob twice helped for her to get the thicker milk. The watery (foremilk) seems to spray out of mine (normally in dd's face/eyes/ears!!) and pulls off and coughs etc. then straight back on, greedy monkey. Kelly mom website has some good advice for fast letdown; dd is never sick if I feed her lying down, gravity I think slows milk let down x

Cravingcake - thanks for your post. That's explained why dd has started being sick more the last couple of days x

showtunesgirl · 05/01/2012 13:21

I actually feed lying down a lot anyway. Though so far, she's not throw up today since I took iggly's advice and have rubbed rather than patted after feeding and I've been keeping her more upright.

My DD had a cold at 5 weeks and vomited after every feed, the whole feed, for days. In the end I took her to the GP who prescribed domperidone to give her 3 times a day which meant she vomited much less milk after a feed. I think he did this because there was a huge lack of wet nappies and she was at risk for dehydration Sad. Keep an eye on nappies and call your gp if she's having fewer than 6 per day.

showtunesgirl · 05/01/2012 16:18

Well so far so good today. She's feeding well and no vomit!
