Upper Lip tie

Hi everyone,

My DS is four months and has a moderate tongue tie, we have an appointment to have this looked at on Friday but after much research i discovered he also has a very thick upper lip tie. My DD is 2 and also has one with a big gap between her two front teeth. My doctor and dentist said this wont be looked at until their adult teeth come in at around 9 :( Im sure this is the reason i had difficulty BF both my kids (is so painful). In America this is a routine procedure but in UK i cant seem to find anyone either NHS or private who will perform this simple snip.. Has anyone out there had this done and could recommened where i start looking.

I was/am tongue tied and upper lip tied, so is my DS. Neither of us have had our snipped but both of our upper lips have ripped, I was kicked in the mouth when I was about 4 or 5 when I was playing in the playground, I remember there was blood EVEYWHERE!

I wanted ds's snipped when he was a baby as I couldn't breast feed but they tend not to do it much these days, tbh there isn't much benefit and it can often heal tied again.
I think the attitude is now to leave it and if it causes problems with feeding or speech then they'll consider snipping it.

I wouldn't worry about it too much tho.

icklepaula - I'm on a bfing helpers forum and asked if anyone knew anything about clipping Lip Ties (I made no mention of you or your situation) and I have had a reply that there is a Max-Fac unit in Exeter that has done one (yes one!!) in the last 3 years and a Mr Sheenan in Manchester who does them as well.

Hopefully you are near enough to one of them to get referred.

My baby also has this and I've been wondering if it's been part of the problem we're having with bf. It must effect the latch surely.

Thanks for posting & good luck x

Thanks everyone. Truthsweet i know Mr Sheenan runs a private clinic in Manchester for tongue ties so hopefully i will get somewhere soon for his lip. I have heard they often rip on their own sounds painful missduff :(

xx

Well I don't really remember the pain, just remember the amount of blood more.
Same with DS he didn't seem in much pain with it but it bled on/off for about a week n couldn't brush his teeth till it had heald.
Unless it is causing you loads of problems with feeding try not to worry about it, it usually just sorts itself out in time.
When DS was first born you could see the string running from lip attaching to upper mouth, between the teeth and down the centre of his mouth, but now he is a bit older it just looks a lot looser and isn't as noticeable, he has a slight gap in his teeth but most little ones do.

I had a gap between my teeth until being in my teens but it's closed in now and you wouldn't know there was ever anything wrong with my upper lip. My tonge tie is still there but again you wouldn't know and never caused any issues

Well dr appoinment went well yesterday and DS does have both lip and tongue tie. he is booked into Yorkhill Childrens Hospital when he is 1yr to have both assesed again to see if they have improved and if not then they have agreed to clip both. Dr was lovely and i didnt feel at all that i was brushed off :) Happy mummy x
