Over feeding?

I'm concerned dd is overfeeding. It's as if she doesn't know when to stop. The last mouthful is usually spat back over me. After a lot of feeds she looks bloated, has hiccoughs and can be quite sick.

She is 4 weeks old and is mixed fed.

Is the overfeeding happening equally with breast and bottle?

Is the vomiting better if she is kept upright after a feed (over shoulder, bouncy chair, swing seat, etc).

Does she seem in pain at all (arching back, shrill cry, inconsolable)?

Yes it seems to be equal. She seems to choke on the last mouthful and spit it back over me, even on the breast.

She has moments of screaming while she is being sick.

It's so tough when they are crying and puking and you can't seem to make it better or make it stop. I had that with my eldest and it was really distressing at times (ok most of the time!).

Have you looked into reflux, tongue tie or some kind or intolerance/allergy? Not to do diagnosis by internet of course, but there are similarities between all 3 and what you are describing.

Do you have any bfing difficulties, such as nipples coming out not nipple shaped at the end of a feed (bullet/lipstick/wedge shaped), or a lot of fussing at the breast (latching on and off and chomping) - this could happen with the bottle too - or pain during/after feeds?

How are her nappies? Lots of wet nappies and at least a few dirty ones a day?

I would burp mine after a let down then put them back on the breast to finish the feed. This helped to reduce build up of wind which had been causing their sick ups after feeds.

She had tongue tie snipped at at a few days old. GP says she doesn't have reflux, had spoken with him because I was concerned about how forceful the vomitting is.

She does fuss about the nipple and my nipples do end up a funny shape, I'm not getting any pain though.

Her nappies seem fine, definitely plenty of dirty ones.

Could the TT have 're-grown' (it doesn't really, just bands of tissue that were behind the snipped TT have then got room to spread out so appear to regrow)?

Have you got support from a BFC/Infant feeding co-ordinator/TT Clinic re. bfing? It sounds like your nipples are still being compressed so that would indicate the latch isn't all it could be (no fault of yours - TT babies are notorious for finding it difficult to latch perfectly).

It might be worth while asking to be seen again at the TT clinic for a follow up assessment to make sure the TT is still absent.

I have heard of babies responding to Cranial Osteopathy well as the TT can cause residual tensions in the head/oral cavity. Might be worth a shot?

Good sign the plenty of wet/dirty nappies - means she getting adequate milk even with the vomiting.

TBH I worry that she is being sick because she is taking too much.

How big are her bottles?

Have you tried feeding in her sitting astride one of your legs like you are playing 'Horsey' or feeding her 'uphill' (you lay/sit semi-reclined and baby lays on you)?

Hecubasdaughter · 02/01/2012 10:51

She has about 4 ounces from her bottles.

I tend to prop her up when she has a bottle. When bf she lies across me.
