6mo ebf baby very unhappy

He's had a virus for about a week (rash, cough, fever) which we've been treating with parcetamol and ibuprofen. I think his big problem is that he needs a poo (I can't remember when he last went, but I'd guess at least 4 days). He is farting quite a bit. Is there anything we can do to make him poo? Are the meds causing constipation? Is it possible he's eaten something (I've never seen him eat!) that's upset him? Help me make him more comfy - please?

There are over the counter meds available but I always found a bit of brown sugar dissolved in water did the trick.

motherofsnortpigs · 26/12/2011 17:28

Right. Will do that now. Thank you.

Sometimes a warm bath and tummy massage in a clockwise direction helps to get things moving...

motherofsnortpigs · 26/12/2011 17:42

He's in the bath with daddy now. Glad you think we're doing the right thing.

you can try cycling his legs while he is lying down.

If you have started weaning you can try prunes and apricots and pears. Also if you are weaning try to get him to drink water.

motherofsnortpigs · 26/12/2011 18:18

Thanks hazchem lots of leg cycling now post-bath, then. He's loving all the pampering. He's not been awake and happy for this long in ages.

The clockwise massage charlatan mentioned looks like you drawing a rugby ball on the LO tum. You start at 11oclock go just under the rib cage to the side of the torso and just above where their legs join the body.

Bicycle legs and dried prunes are very good I found. I dont like dried apricot because non organic ones use a known allergen in the process to keep the orange colour. But toy could use fresh ones I guess!

motherofsnortpigs · 26/12/2011 19:36

Thank you lilham for the massage explanation. We usually push his knees up to his chest and rotate clockwise. He really doesn't eat anything at all yet even though we offer at every meal. I put the brown sugar and water in a syringe to get some in him. He's asleep now. I'll update if he produces :)

If that doesn't work, a never-yet-failed solution for us is for ME to drink orange juice (a large glass though)... dunno how it works, but it does within 12 hours....

motherofsnortpigs · 26/12/2011 20:24

He's up again grizzling. I'll see if I can persuade DH to go and get some orange juice. I've already put my pj's on.

Still nothing...

Hmmm I would let nature take it's course then.... unless you want to try giving him a medicine spoon of orange juice - although I don't think juice is recommended - but I think that's because of teeth?

20secondstocomply · 27/12/2011 18:31

Hi, sorry to hear your LO is unhappy. This sounds strange but if you have a vibrating bouncy chair try putting him in that. Never fails to make my son go. I hope he's better soon.

motherofsnortpigs · 27/12/2011 18:56

We are still poo-less here. Littlewavylines I've not acquired any oj yet. It's on the list. I do have a door bouncer 20. Will try that tomorrow. He's back in the bath having had lots of tummy massage and bicycle legs today. I may have to resort to the gp. I think there's a surgery tomorrow.

Is he ebf with no solids? You mentioned he doesn't eat much. It's strange to be constipated from just ibuprofen and paracetamol? Btw you can purée the prunes and add it to his cereals. I don't think my DD can eat a dried one at 6mo!

Hope you get a poonami soon.

LittleWaveyLines · 27/12/2011 19:18

Well ebf babies can go days between poos and still be normal - my DD starts seeming uncomfortable at about day 5, but can go longer... I'm not sure its even classed as constipation in ebf babies!

motherofsnortpigs · 27/12/2011 19:31

lilham He's offered food at every meal, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't eat it, he certainly shuns anything on a spoon. (There are 3 other dc's at the table so I'm not giving him my full attention Blush ). I would have thought that the artificial sweetners in the meds would act as a laxative.

LittleWavey I'm glad you think over 5 days in within the realms of normal. He seemed happier today, and the situation clearly can't go on indefinitely. I guess we'll just have to carry on waiting.

Putting a bit of Vaseline on his bum might help.

heather1980 · 27/12/2011 19:41

if you are very desparate you can try an infant glycerin suppository, you can buy them from any chemist, they will get thinks moving in about 10 minutes.

LittleWaveyLines · 27/12/2011 20:00

This article says even 11-12 days is normal! www.mother-2-mother.com/normal.htm#NormalStools

As does this one : pediatrics.about.com/od/weeklyquestion/a/04_bf_cnstipatn.htm

motherofsnortpigs · 28/12/2011 09:23

We had a soiled nappy! Not a poosplosion by any means, but things are moving. Thanks for all your help :)

charlatan · 28/12/2011 09:31
