How do I get out of the house?!

I've already asked a few stupid questions on this board, but this seems like the stupidest. DD is 7 weeks old, and I feel like I can't leave the house on my own for more than the time it takes to dash round the local supermarket, in case she needs to eat.

I've tried feeding in public a few times, but always with DH around, and each time it's been a struggle. At home, I use a breastfeeding pillow as I can't figure out how to support her without one, but obviously I can't lug around a lifebelt-sized wedge all the time. Without the pillow, my wrists hurt trying to hold her (she falls off the tit if I don't hold her head in place) and I wind up curling forward, killing my back. Supporting the back of her neck seems to twist her body around, and I'm worried about hurting her. And I have no hands free, because I need to hold up my saggy bap up for her with the other hand, which makes me worry about people walking off with my bag if I'm out on my own! She also tends to pull off every thirty seconds, leaving my nipple hanging out in the breeze and putting paid to any hope of discreet feeding.

I know I must be doing something wrong, but for the life of me I can't figure out how I can actually get out of the house for more than half an hour. (Have tried bottles of expressed milk - no good, she hated them!) I've only been out twice in the last week, both times to the doctor, so any suggestions would be really helpful!

(Sorry about the rant... )

Thanks again for the replies - I decided to just go for it today (DH's birthday) and we went out for beer and pizza. Folded up DH's coat to make a pillow on my lap and fed at table (tucked away in corner of restaurant) - rather ungainly, definitely, but bloody hell, it was good to get out for a while! Just need to try it on my own sometime... Xmas Hmm

If you've got a local bfing group or children's centre you can practice bfing there - had a fair few mums start off their bfing in public at our local bfing group.

Sorry for bumping my own thread, but just wanting to ask - can BF groups really help if positioning is the problem? I have no luck with side-lying feeding, for example (latch is crap and boob just slides out of her mouth), but I've been to local BF cafes a few times and it doesn't seem like that's something they could demonstrate/correct there!

Getting really fed up - have been trying different positions at home but DD can't latch in them and just winds up getting frustrated and screaming her head off/dribbling milk everywhere. Increasingly tempted to say 'bollocks to this'. :(

I think it's more a case of you just might find the right person to help you at a BF group. I was lucky - one of the HVs I had just clicked with me and she helped loads, she grabbed hold and wedged a massive chunk of boob into ds's mouth and it just made more sense. We had to do it repeatedly though. After that he got it and could stay attached in various positions.

I never managed lying down feeding though.

Apologies if this has been mentioned but have you tried biological nurturing? I can't link as feeding but I found that my baby could latch herself on using this technique. When I'm out I use a variation to allow for small hard chairs! I find it much easier than any of the other holds.

I did try BN, with no luck - DD just lay face down and screamed and kicked with frustration! Xmas Hmm

Ok, massive norked breastfeeder here.

What I do is sit with my leg crossed, so my arm holding baby can lean on leg a bit, I don't lift boob up, just let baby latch on slightly underneath. Might lean forward a wee bit as well.

specialagentmeh · 25/12/2011 23:34

No good advice on positioning sorry, but I always feel more confident with a specific breast feeding top or t shirt on with a kind of horizontal flap across front. A Swedish company 'boob' make them but also jojo maman bebe.

FannyFifer · 25/12/2011 23:35

Also I cannot feed lying on my side, my boobs just do not go in right position.

Was a great position on my DS but my boobs are larger and saggier than a few years ago and it's totally impossible with dd.

Bab,
I had the exact same prob with both my girls and it took me about 4/5 months to leave the house with my 1st girl. It wS terrible I was a complete hermit.

2nd time round I was adamant I would not allow that to happen again, I was still sore and found it difficult until I bought a baba sling from breastfeedingheaven and after approx 1 week of constant practice I was out and about Grin and able to actually nurse using the sling WHILST shopping or playing in the park!

Hang in there, before you know it, this stage will have passed and you will be so glad you stuck with it.

I can remember so well the pain and frustration this caused but keep thinking positively. Your lil' one will be in school before you know it Wink
