Tongue tie?

I'm seeing my health visitor about this on Tuesday but just wanted to get some opinions before I go. My DS had a tongue tie which was spotted when he was born. It was snipped when he was 5 days old and he fed fine afterwards.

DD (5 weeks old) has been acting as though she might have one too. She's clicking a lot when feeding, swallowing loads of air, feeding frequently and I've got cracked nipples which I can't get rid of. I asked the midwife who delivered her and she said she thought there might be a slight one. A midwife on the ward later said there wasn't one. I've since had her attachment checked by several people and they have all said it's fine. A lady I saw on Friday suggested it might be tongue tie.

We're both recovering from thrush and I'm getting a bit fed up to be honest. Who is the best person to diagnose this if she has got it? Do health visitors know what they are looking for? And if it turns out it's not thrush, does anyone have any other ideas hat could be causing these problems?

i would try and see a breastfeeding counsellor if i were you.
i think it's unlikely an HV would diagnose one, unless they just happen to have had more than the usual amount of breastfeeding training and have seen plenty of other tongue ties

where in the country are you? some places you can self-refer for tongue tie probs...

Keep pushing my youngest DC4 had a tongue tie that was spotted at birth but I was told it was too small to cut.
Fast forward 15 weeks later when it was finally cut, Id had deep tissue thrush, third degree cuts to both breasts but the Dr, Hv etc were not at all bothered as DC was gaining weight.(Never mind me being in tears at every feed or even thinking about a feed)

In the end I DEMANDED a referral to consultant, after repeat visits to HV amd Dr from 1 week old.
He snipped it then and there and said although it didnt look bad to an untrained eye he has no idea how Id kept feeding - didnt admit it was beacuse my little angel refused a bottle. As soon as it was cut I fed DC and cried with relief rather than pain.

yesterday I'm in Derbyshire. It would be good if I could self refer. I'm also seeing the doctor tomorrow for a postnatal check so I'll ask him and the health visitor and if I get nowhere I'll try to see a counsellor or self refer.

dilligaf how annoying that you had to wait so long. I really hate it when the NHS tries to be cheap, especially when you're trying to breastfeed which they are always going on about (just had an annoying experience when getting thrush treatment...)

Thanks for the advice.

there is a list here of places that will divide tongue ties, might be worth ringing your local one?

It's quite telling you have just had thrush treatment as TT and thrush symptoms can be mistaken (frighteningly enough!!).

This is a good list of symptoms of TT and might help you.

Thanks for the links, very helpful. I think we definitely had thrush, DD had a thick white coating on her tongue which has since gone. And I'm not in absolute agony when feeding her like I was with the thrush. It's more painful than it should be though, so hopefully I'll get some answers tomorrow.

Glad it was a definite diagnosis as some GPs now just reach for the Daktarin as soon as a mum says 'I've got sore nipples' (or at least it seems it from other BFing supporters tales!)

Good luck with tomorrow.
