Help! Newborn just cluster fed for 8 hours

Sally109 · 18/12/2011 07:28

My Dd is 3 days old and seemed to be feeding well, with some cluster feeds of 3/4 hours and other feeds up to 4 hours apart. However last night she woke at 9pm after a 3 hour sleep and has only slept for the odd 10mins ever since.

She will fall asleep, normally on the breast but on putting her down she starts to show feeding signs and then wakes seeming to wany to feed again.

I have tried to 'go with the flow' but am worried she is not feeding properly, particularly as feeds were only 10 to 20 mins. Know I shouldn't worry about foremilk/hindmilk but are these short feeds the problem?

completely normal

mine did the same at same age and i called midwife unit convinced there was something wrong... (there wasnt)... she is telling breasts to produce milk for her

also at 3 days it might still be colostrum.... go with it and in 3 days time it should be in the past!

You may find you milk comes in properly today if it isn't in already. She is just ordering n what she needs. Perfectly normal at this age.

Yes, completely normal.
Congratulations Xmas Smile

What nappy output are you getting? How comfortable are you feeling - any breast or nipple pain other than perhaps a bit of discomfort for a few moments after latching?

I am filling in a feeding chart I printed off Kellymom (following link someone posted on here).

She has had the required wet nappies of 1,2,3 on days 1 to 3. She did 4 pooey nappies in first 24 hours, 2 black and 2 dark brown but she has only done 1 more poo when the 'goal' on the chart is 3 for day 3. It was a slightly lighter brown though and quite big.

I have tingly pain which is worse at start of feed and still there but bearable later in feed. Had no nipple problems until this morning when the tips have bled and stuck to my breast pads. Think my positioning got sloppy as I am now so tired, really hoping she sleeps today so I can recover, have farmed 3 yo out to grandparents!

Ok, well that sounds ok. You will probably see poo transitions today and tomorrow (ie going lighter, yellowy etc).

Sooo easy to let that position slip when you're tired but as you probably know if you BF your 3yo it takes a few weeks for them to get to the point where they can help you more with the positioning, as they get stronger. But you can see why it's happened which is really positive. You confident you know how to resolve it?

Didn't manage to get feeding established with my DS so never got to that stage.

I am trying to find a comfy position at the moment, lying down worked before milk came in but now sitting up seems better. Don't have a proper feeding pillow though and I think she may be slipping a bit using normal pillows.

OK. Do you know anyone who can come and give you some tips on positioning and support?

While some mums find nursing pillows helpful, they're generally not necessary so with the right RL support you should be ok without spending more money :)

Lying down is fabulous and I highly recommend learning that position but as you have found it's sometimes a bit tricky as your milk comes in as your breast shape can change, as can feeding lengths, etc.

Thanks for all the replies, really helpfull. She seems to have fed well today, back to long feeds every 2 hours and I feel better about positioning her.

She is still doing plenty of wet nappies but she still hasn't pooed again. Does anyone know at what point that becomes a worry?
