Which brand of teat will work best for an exclusively bf baby?

My dd was breastfed for 6 months, no bottle. I have recently begun to introduce some solids and would also like to begin a bottle at night because she seems to be very hungry all the time. I also hope that introducing formula will eventually help me to stop bf-ing gradually over the next 6 months.
Problem: Dd thinks bottles are rubbish and mummy's booby is much better and she can have it whenever she likes
I am using Avent bottles and sma gold.
I have tried to persevere with the Avent, but she seems to just hate it, so i'm prepared to try another. Which teat do bf babies seem to take to the best? I've read other threads and the 'Mam Ultivent' has been mentioned as very good. I'm aware that this is no exact science, my dd1 took sma gold from an avent bottle no problems at 6 months. But obviously, dd2 needs more specialised equipment!
Also, if I choose another teat, do they only fit onto their own brand bottles? Would a Mam teat fit on an Avent bottle?

Thanks all!

Try a very cheap brown soft teat, possibly with a slit rather than holes - only one DD2 took for ages. With the advantage that you are then in the realms of cheapness.

the nuk ones are good, we use them, but hard to get hold of esp in bigger sizes. some teats fit some bottles of diff brands but its a bit random - i have a feeling the wide neck nuk teats fit the avent bottles (but the avent teats don't fit the nuk bottles) either that or its the other way round - just remember dh getting drenched one time (in front of mil) he felt stupid

oliveoil · 10/01/2006 15:51

only ones that worked for both my bottle hating girls were the NUK range.

I think that you have to get matching bottles and teats, they are in Asda for about £3 I think, bit pricey.

i used advent and found the very good for combined feeding hth

I've been using the Mam Ultivent with DD (well, other people do) and she seems to like it.

Gloworm · 10/01/2006 15:53

NUK ones were the only ones ds would use, was advised by the chemist that they were more similar to breast feeding in the way that the milk squirted into the mouth.

fastasleep · 10/01/2006 15:53

Have you seen those breast-shaped ones? You could always try those! I think maybe Mothercare sell them... ok.. not helpful...

beatie · 10/01/2006 15:55

Someone here recommended the MAM Ultivent, so I got one. It works well for us.

PiccadillyCircus · 10/01/2006 15:55

Have also just tried the Mam teat on a Avent bottle and it seems to be OK.

cathyspam · 10/01/2006 15:55

haberman feeder is supposed to be most similar to breast - baby whisperers fave!

PiccadillyCircus · 10/01/2006 15:55

Well, I have screwed it on rather than seeing what DD thinks.

NewYearsRacerLution · 10/01/2006 16:01

Another vote for NUK - quite a soft teat and a good shape.

Hello fellow junie

Have you thought about introducing a trainer beaker or similar, so she could be taking a bit of water with her solids and her formula too? DD would not take a bottle (for ebm) although we did have some success with the Mam one. So I got a Boots beaker with handle and a teat type spout (they come in blue or pink). I let her play with it and she started taking water from it and after a few weeks a bit of ebm and now takes 2 full feeds a day from it at nursery. She isn't really drinking from it by herself, but she loves holding the handles and she can direct it to her mouth, but need help to angle it right. I figured that if I was only going to have to wean her off a bottle in 6 months it made more sense to try a beaker (lazy mummy! ) and it seems to be working.

NUK website if you are interested

Blondeinlondon · 10/01/2006 16:34

mam teats on avent worked for us

LipstickMum · 10/01/2006 16:42

Ooh, thanks for the replies!

fastasleep, I have seen the boob shaped one, frankly I'd feel a right tit getting that out in public, I wonder if it works..?

A few votes for both Nuk and Mam, I'll investigate both. Nuk are much cheaper than Mam, even a bottle, hopefully she'll like those!

Hi Mandy, I thought about trainer cup, but for various reasons I want to stick to bottle = milk, cup = water. Plus, it will feel like my little baby is all grown up if I ditch bottles altogether!

MI - the cheap brown ones, are they just latex instead of silicone?? It's probably more flexible...it looks it.

Ah great, so a Mam teat on an Avent bottle works! Good news.
