I bf dc1 for 3 weeks , he had trouble latching correctly . I was using shields but he wouldn't latch at all without. I have one inverted nipple and the other doesn't stick out that much but does when stimulated.

I expressed for 3 months and also gave formula. Then formula fed from 3 months as it was hard to get out with my expressing routine so reluctantly gave up.

I really really want to bf dc2 successfully , I have bought shields , got my manual pump etc.

I have read that an inverted nipple can make it harder but does not mean it won't happen. I was apart from dc1 for first few hours due to retained placenta and pph so think this had a negative effect on starting bf anyway.

I intend to join a bf support group a month before my due date so I can feel comfortable going there when baby arrives.

Anyone got any tips on what I can do differently this time? My nipples were split and bleeding even with shields which ds would scratch off and cry all the time ! It was rarely a loving experience and he lost 12% of weight so I really would love to do better this time and maybe not have to use silly shields.

I think the support groups are a great ideam mine have been invaluble.

I think its difficult to give advice before any specific problems develop. I had flat nipples and it was through the use of shields to feed that they eventually 'popped' out and it was over a month before he latched on without, also agree that it still really hurts with the sheild, maybe because they don't develop a very good latch?

I hope it goes better for you this time, sorry if that was a bit of a random mumble!

Congratulations!

Get your baby checked by a knowledgeable bf professional as soon as poss after birth to rule out a tongue tie would be my suggestion as they tend to be genetic. Also make sure that you as for help as soon as you start to have problems rather than waiting.

Thank you for the advice , I really hope I manage longer this time and will persevere with shields if I have to. Also I will ask about tongue tie this time, ds was checked last time but I didn't know to ask.
