My dd is over 7 months and I have been battling to wean her off my breast onto formula and make her take solids. The last two weeks has been great I have got her interested at last in food and make her take one bottle of formula a day. I normally breast feed her 4 times a day. Today i gave her a bottle for her 5.30pm feed (second last feed). When it came to her last feed 8pm, my breats were engorged and even though she sucked for longer (i encouraged her) my breasts still feel lumpy. They don't feel painful but I am worried about these lumps incase I get mastitis. I have already had it three times. I dont want to express now to totally empty them as wouldn't want to stimulate more milk production. I am so excited at the prospect of finishing breast feeding, now that my dd will take a bottle I just want to stop as quick as i can. I know you are supposed to drop a feed every few days/week but is it normal for your breasts to be hard/lumpy in between and am i right to not express to empty them and get rid of the lumps. I did put hot flannels on and massage them. Any advice would be a great help!!! Thank you

Mammyshirl,I had to give up breastfeeding overnight as I was put on antibiotics that were not compatible with bfing.I found it painful for about 24hrs but found putting cold cabbage leaves in my bra really soothed them (really!!).They were also quite lumpy and I did resort to hot baths and just letting my boobs leak, probaly didn't help though.I also wore two tight bras and a small towel in my bra to bind them for anout two or three days.Needless to say I didn't go out much.
Hope that helps a bit ,good luck

Mammyshirl - I think you're the one I've advised not to expres to empty BUT you can express a bit to make them more comfortable.
