So I have my first night out since ds was born, he is 14 weeks and ebf. I have a couple if questions as can't remember from dd.

How much milk do you think he will drink in a feed? In particular I'm thinking of his last feed before bed.

When I get home do I pump and dump or does the alcohol disappear in a certain amount of time?

Thanks

The alcohol is like your blood, it will reduce and disappear over time so pumping and dumping doesn't work. You can still have a glass ( or two ) and be ok, just wait a couple of hrs if you can to feed. Enjoy your night out! :)

Use the same logic as if you were deciding whether to drive after drinking.

ie. You shouldn't really drive/feed straight after having 2 or more drinks. But if you wait a couple of hours for your body to process the alcohol, you'll be fine to drive/feed.

A rough rule-of-thumb would be to allow an hour for every standard unit of alcohol. By 'standard unit' I mean this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_of_alcohol - so a large glass of wine would count as three standard units.

I must say that I have been very casual about drinking and breastfeeding (although being moderate, of course) and have never noticed my daughter being affected whatsoever.

PS. On a personal level, I would just say "relax, have a great time, pace yourself, make every second drink non-alcoholic and (provided you're not stumbling or slurring) you'll be fine"

Don't forget that your milk alcohol level is the same as your blood alcohol level. So if you have a blood alcohol of 0.5% then you will have a breastmilk alcohol level of 0.5%. You will also probably be dead so it won't really be a concern!

This has an interesting chart to work out how much % alcohol going by no. of units and your body weight. The highest no. of units they have is 10 and the only weight that would be at 0.5% after drinking 10 units is 90lbs/40kg....

For example if you are 10st and plan on having 3 units your milk alcohol level will be 0.1% but will go down by 0.01% every 40mins.

For comparison orange juice has up to 0.09% (depending on variety and season).
